Honda Civic Type R Specifications & Features

Compared to its outrageously styled predecessor, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R look is more restrained, but it doesn’t make it any less thrilling to drive. The new Civic Type R has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the same output settings as the previous model but with 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual gearbox of the FWD Type R has been enhanced to handle the added power, and Honda has improved brake cooling to help it withstand track-day abuse. The new CTR is made in Japan with an Ohio powertrain, but it’s entertaining to drive wherever it goes. We are big fans of the Honda Civic Type R since we were so thrilled with it.

What’s New?

The next Honda hatchback wants to deliver the same enjoyment as the previous model but with greater power and a sexier appearance. Although the new CTR’s chassis is bigger, its muscles have expanded to fit smaller 19-inch wheels with wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Additionally, the front and rear tracks are wider, which enhances brake cooling. An updated 315-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and six-speed manual gearbox in the CTR produce nine more horsepower and 15 more pound-feet of torque. Since the lap recording and performance instrumentation can now be accessible via the car’s 9.0-inch infotainment display, the Type R’s onboard datalogger no longer requires a smartphone app.

Honda Civic Type R Engine, Power, Acceleration & Performance

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that powered the previous-generation Civic Type R also powers the new Civic Type R. However, the power output has grown to 315 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 310 pound-feet of torque at 2600 to 4000 rpm thanks to a revised turbocharger and an improved exhaust system. Additional enhancements for the Type R include a bigger radiator and better brake cooling. To enhance the four-cylinder symphony of the vehicle, Honda has also raised the rpm at which the active exhaust valve opens.

Rowing at the new CTR’s six-speed manual gearbox should be made more rewarding by a smaller flywheel and an improved rev-match system. Torque steer is effectively reduced by the Honda’s revolutionary dual-axis strut front suspension, which is only available in front-drive models. The new Civic Type R doesn’t have the same radical styling as the previous model, but it still has a large back wing, additional aerodynamic additions, and 19-inch wheels shod with gripping Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tires. During testing, the CTR reached 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and the quarter-mile mark at 106 mph in 13.5 seconds.

According to the EPA, the slight increase in horsepower found in the Civic Type R doesn’t come at the expense of fuel efficiency. Cool EPA estimates for the hot hatch’s city and highway mileage are 22 mpg and 28 mpg, respectively. When equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, it matches the EPA figure for the all-wheel-drive Golf R, but the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gives the Golf R an advantage with an additional 2 mpg on the interstate.

The starting price of the Honda Civic Type R is as competitive as its performance. The CTR is not only less expensive than the Volkswagen Golf R, but it’s also almost at the price of the base Toyota Supra because there aren’t many options available after its initial MSRP. The most potent Civic Type R is ultimately an inexpensive sports car with five doors, yet individual preference will determine whether two seats are preferable to four.

It is a hot hatch that’s comfortable to live with, has more grip than most people do, and accelerates to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Big performance is limited by the car’s small fuel tank, loud roads, and two-tone red and black cabin. Although it will make automobile lovers drool, the Civic Type R’s charms and inherent usefulness will also appeal to the general public who drives.
