Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Specifications & Features

This isn’t the Mitsubishi Eclipse sports coupe that some people were hoping would come back. With an aggressive appearance and a rakish rear end, the 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross tries to emulate its namesake, but on the inside, it’s just a typical compact SUV. Only a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 152 horsepower is available. Acceleration is a little sluggish, and AWD and a CVT are standard. Although the Eclipse Cross doesn’t have particularly athletic handling, it does provide a calm ride, and the cabin is quiet while cruising. The Eclipse Cross’s interior offers most of the standard modern conveniences and a sizable trunk, but it falls short of competitors like the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, and Volkswagen Tiguan in terms of overall refinement.

What’s New?

All-wheel drive is now standard across the full lineup of the Eclipse Cross as of this year. A new 18-inch wheel design and standard LED head- and foglights were also fitted by Mitsubishi. While SE models receive silver-colored accents on the front bumper, the top-tier SEL trim now has lower trim that is body color. The Eclipse Cross’s interior is approximately what you would anticipate given its appealing pricing. Although some competitors, like the Mazda CX-5, offer plusher cabins if you’re willing to pay a little more, there aren’t any shockingly cheap materials. The seats are covered in a fashionable, long-lasting fabric, and while the padding was more than sufficient, after a few hours behind the wheel our backs began to yearn for greater support.

Nobody will be in awe of the turbocharged four-cylinder in the Eclipse Cross. On testing, the last one jogged to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds. The engine generates power smoothly when paired with a CVT. As we would expect from crossovers in this class, aggressive throttle applications produce less engine noise than we had anticipated, and highway cruising is quiet and unremarkable. The suspension of the Eclipse Cross is designed for comfort; when turning quickly, there is some body roll. The ride quality benefits from this softness as the chassis maintains its composure when driving over potholes and railway crossings. However, rival crossovers like the Ford Escape and the Kia Sportage more thoroughly dampen road vibrations that are transmitted up through the steering wheel and seats. The steering is precise and light, which is beneficial for maneuverability in parking lots but disappointing for off-road antics.
