Motor & Performance
There are two i5 variants available, the first of which is the 335-hp eDrive40, which uses a single electric motor to drive the rear wheels. For a combined 590 horsepower, a second electric motor is added to the front axle of a hotter M60 xDrive variant. We were delighted by the i5 M60’s nimble handling, confidence-inspiring levels of cornering grip, and robust dual-motor powertrain while we were testing a prototype of the sedan. Active anti-roll bars, a sportier suspension setting, bigger tires, and rear-wheel steering are further features added to M60 versions to further enhance the car’s athletic appearance. It has an 84.3-kWh battery pack, providing a range of 295 miles for the eDrive40 and 256 miles for the M60. The battery can be fast-charged from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes using DC fast-charging stations.
Price & Mileage
If your priority is to maximize range, the eDrive40 variant of the i5 will be your go-to choice. With its single electric motor powering the rear wheels, it offers a longer cruising distance compared to the more performance-focused M60 model. However, for those of us who appreciate a thrilling driving experience, sacrificing a bit of range for more power and better cornering grip is a trade-off we’re willing to make. In terms of pricing, the 2024 BMW i5 starts at $67,795, providing an enticing entry point into the world of electric luxury sedans. The M60, with its dual motors and increased performance, commands a higher price tag, reaching up to $85,095. As for the official fuel economy ratings from the EPA, they have not yet been published for the 2024 i5.
Acceleration & Features
According to BMW, the i5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.7 seconds using the more potent of the two powertrains. The dashboard of the i5 is dominated by a huge, curved panel with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The most recent iDrive 8.5 interface from BMW is simple to use and can be updated via over-the-air updates if necessary. All variants come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, in-dash navigation. Also a wireless smartphone charging pad, a Harman/Kardon sound system, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. In 5.1 seconds, the RWD Long Range model can go from 0 to 60 mph. In under 3.5 seconds, the Model 3 Performance accelerates from 0 to 60 mph. With three distinct settings to alter the steering effort, the steering is precise and evenly weighted. Although the ride is robust without being harsh, there is still a lot of road disturbance inside the cabin as the tires thwack and thrum over potholes in the pavement. Oddly, the Model 3 doesn’t come with AM radio or SiriusXM satellite radio, but navigation, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity are all standard.
