2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs Lexus GX: What To Choose?
Surprise! The Land Cruiser is making a comeback, sharing a platform with the updated Lexus GX. This time, it’s a medium-size SUV, taking on the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, while the full-size SUV market is left to the Toyota Sequoia. Inside, it seats five and offers modern infotainment and advanced driver-assistance features. The 2024 Land Cruiser will hit dealerships in spring. As for the Lexus GX, it has finally been redesigned for 2024 with an all-new platform, updated powertrain, and modern features. Despite its rugged appearance, it now looks more contemporary. Riding on the same body-on-frame platform as the Toyota Sequoia and Tundra, the GX fills the gap between the flagship LX and the more interior-focused TX in the Lexus SUV lineup.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Engine & Performance
In an exciting update for the 2024 Land Cruisers. All models will now be equipped with the innovative 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid iForce Max powertrain and eight-speed transmission. Already proven successful in the top-tier Tacoma TRD Pro. While the new powertrain boasts slightly lower horsepower at 326 combined. It significantly outperforms the previous 5.7-liter V-8 with a robust combined torque of 465 pound-feet compared to the old model’s 401 pound-feet. Particularly in off-road conditions. Notably, the iForce generates peak torque at just 1700 rpm, offering improved capabilities where it truly matters off the beaten path, a notable advantage over the previous 3600 rpm.
Price & Mileage
In its previous U.S. market appearance, the Land Cruiser had a hefty starting price of $87,030. However, this time, Toyota has pleasantly surprised us with a much more appealing starting price in the mid-$50,000 range. Thanks to its smaller frame and five-seat cabin. As for fuel economy, Toyota has not yet released the estimates. But we anticipate significant improvements over the disappointing 14 mpg combined of the 2021 model. With the introduction of the reformulated hybrid Cruiser, it is likely to outperform the larger LX600, which only managed 19 mpg combined. This change brings a breath of fresh air to the Land Cruiser. Making it a more affordable and eco-friendly option for potential buyers.
Acceleration & Features
The Land Cruiser’s integrated tow hitch comes standard. Though this smaller and less powerful version has a reduced tow rating of 6000 pounds compared to the previous model’s 8100 pounds—still a respectable figure. This engine choice limits the Land Cruiser to accommodate only five passengers. Due to the hybrid system’s 1.87-kWh NiMH battery placed where a third row could have been. The load floor is higher than ideal. On the bright side, all Land Cruisers feature Toyota’s excellent infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, it’s worth noting that the base 1958 trim has a relatively modest 8.0-inch display. While the other trims boast a much larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.
Lexus GX

Engine & Performance
The GX lineup will initially feature a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine, delivering a robust 349 horsepower. This impressive power output surpasses the previous generation’s V-8. All models will come equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are tailored for off-road enthusiasts, boasting a range of additional features like 18-inch wheels fitted with 33-inch All-Terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with enhanced wheel articulation, crawl-control functionality, and selectable drive modes tailored for various terrains.
Price & MIleage
The GX has received a complete makeover for 2024, and thankfully, the price increase won’t be significant. You can anticipate a starting price of approximately $60,000, while the rugged Overtrail models might reach close to $80,000. Although it switched from a V-8 to a twin-turbo V-6, don’t expect a substantial improvement in fuel economy compared to the 2023 model’s EPA estimates of 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway.
Acceleration & Features
The GX lineup offers different trims, namely Premium, Premium +, Overtrail, Overtrail+, and Luxury. The Premium, Premium +, Overtrail, and Overtrail+ trims boast a strong towing capacity of 8000 pounds, while the Luxury models can tow up to 6990 pounds, and the Luxury+ trims have a towing capacity of 6780 pounds. As for the upcoming hybrid powertrain, its towing capacity remains undisclosed. All GX models come equipped with a spacious 14.0-inch infotainment system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display is available, which can be customized to display various information for the driver’s convenience.
