Toyota GR Supra Specifications & Features
The 2023 Toyota GR Supra, Toyota’s pinnacle sports car, makes up for the brand’s more subdued sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs with enough thrills, panache, and drama. The GR Supra, which was created and constructed alongside the BMW Z4 convertible, has comparable build quality and less complex but attractive interior elements. Although the 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine at the base level offers more than enough power, we can’t help but appreciate the savage, optional 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter BMW inline-six that propels this two-seater. The only configuration is rear-wheel drive, and the GR Supra excels on winding roads and race tracks thanks to its sure-footed chassis and precise steering. The GR Supra is still one of our favorite sports cars, even though some Toyota fanboys may feel that it borrows too extensively from the BMW parts bin and has some obscenely big blind spots due to its sweptback external design.
What’s New?
Toyota has introduced a six-speed manual transmission to the lineup for the 2023 model year, no doubt motivated by the complaints over the GR Supra’s absence of a manual transmission. The manual will come standard on a new limited edition known as the A91-MT model and will be offered as a free option with the more potent turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six from BMW. Only 500 of the A91-MT will be sold in the United States, and it will only be available in matte white or matte grey paint with a brown-and-black two-tone interior. The suspension and steering systems have been retuned, and a new driving mode called Hairpin+ has been included. Hairpin+ allows for greater wheelspin on one of the rear tires to aid in rotating the GR Supra around incredibly tight hairpin turns.
Toyota GR Supra Engine, Power, Acceleration & Performance
Previous until 2023, all Supra models came standard with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission; this year, a six-speed manual transmission is finally offered, although only in conjunction with the optional turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. On the test track, the 2020 GR Supra 3.0 clocked acceleration times of 3.7 seconds to 60 mph and 9.5 ticks to 100 mph. These numbers slightly rise to 3.9 and 9.6 seconds, respectively, with the six-speed manual. That puts it up against cars like the BMW M2 Competition, Porsche Cayman GTS, and Chevy Camaro SS in the major leagues. It is faster than the renowned fourth-generation Supra, which had an inline-six engine with 320 horsepower that was sequentially turbocharged.
The GR Supra’s suspension is gentle enough to drive daily despite its performance capability. Its accurate, finely weighted, and direct steering adds to its fun-to-drive appeal. At our test track, the less expensive four-cylinder variant ran a swift 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. That beats the BMW Z4, the GR Supra’s German cousin, which scored a 5.0-second pace to 60 mph. The ease with which our long-term GR Supra got stuck in the snow was the only drawback we discovered with its performance.

The turbocharged four-cylinder GR Supra achieves EPA ratings of 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the interstate, making it the most economical model available. The statistics for the more potent GR Supra 3.0 are still rather respectable, coming in at 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for the automatic and 19 and 27 mpg for the manual 3.0.

Speaking of infotainment, the 8.8-inch central display in the GR Supra features very little reskin of BMW’s most recent iDrive user interface. All models come fitted with a digital gauge display, which has a different look than the Bimmer. Android Auto is not accessible, although navigation and Apple CarPlay functionality are. Although a 12-speaker JBL audio system is an option, given the size of the GR Supra’s cabin, we anticipate that the base 10-speaker audio system will be adequate for the majority of buyers.

We believe the blistering quickness of the six-cylinder 3.0 is worth the extra money, even though there isn’t much-driving enjoyment lost with the four-cylinder GR Supra 2.0. The Driver Aid package, which includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and an ineffective lane-keeping assistance system, is best avoided. It’s a no-brainer to choose the new six-speed manual that comes with the 3.0 model since it’s equally expensive as the automatic. Every GR Supra comes with a free day of high-performance driving and a one-year participation in the National Auto Sport Association, a sports car racing sanctioning body. And consider this: The money you save by forgoing the Driver’s Help package could be used to purchase new tires and more track time.

Conclusion
The GR Supra is a fantastic sports vehicle that delights and surprises with equal measures of performance, refinement, and attitude. Try to enter and exit it gracefully. Hard to peer out of, plenty of inside BMW parts. Excellent interior design, spirited handling, and an inline-six with a massive turbocharger.
