Toyota Prius Prime Specifications & Features

The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid sheds its previous ugly-duckling look and transforms into a metaphorical swan, just like its gasoline-electric hybrid sibling. The most recent Prius Prime is shorter, wider, and longer than the previous model, bordering on a sporty appearance. A significantly enhanced powerplant that produces a total of 220 horsepower—nearly 100 more than its predecessor—complements its new sheetmetal. Even better, Toyota asserts that the newest plug-25-mile in’s driving range surpasses the 25-mile rating of the previous Prime by 19 miles. This new Prime is both a beast and a beauty when compared to other Prius models.

What’s New?

For 2023, Toyota entirely revamped the Prius Prime, giving the plug-in hybrid a fresh exterior and a completely updated chassis. The Prius Prime’s new underpinnings, which represent the second generation of the Japanese automaker’s TNGA-C architecture, are said to be more stiff, lighter, and have a lower centre of gravity than the previous-generation TNGA-C bones of the Prius from a year ago. A new lithium-ion battery pack should give the most recent plug-in Prius a little less than 40 miles of all-electric driving range, while a larger engine and the car’s electric motors combine to create an additional 99 horsepower compared to the outgoing Prius Prime.

The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine from the previous year is gone. A bigger 2.0-liter engine with 160 horsepower has taken its place. It works in tandem with two electric motors, one of which drives the drive wheels and the other of which operates a planetary gearset to distribute the gas engine’s grunt in a way akin to a constantly variable automatic gearbox that is driven by a belt. In the end, 220 horsepower is produced, which is higher than the base Mazda 3, Honda Civic Si, or Subaru Impreza. A wonderful moment to be alive. The Prius Prime only has front-wheel drive, however Toyota may also provide all-wheel drive as an optional extra. If so, a Prius Prime with this configuration should include an additional electric motor that only drives the vehicle’s rear axle.

The Prius Prime’s electric driving range has increased from its previous 25 miles of EPA-rated range to as much as 44 miles thanks to a new lithium-ion battery pack. Also, the roof-mounted solar panels that charge the battery pack while the car is stationary make charging the Prius Prime’s battery easier than ever. The 2023 Prius Prime almost matches the 2022 model’s EPA combined fuel-economy figure of 54 mpg while using both its electric motors and four-cylinder engine for propulsion, with a rating of up to 53 mpg as well as a total rating of 121 MPGe.

The LE, XLE, and Limited trims are no longer available for 2023. The SE, XSE, and XSE Premium trim levels of the Prius Prime now reflect the model’s increased athleticism. As it has features like keyless entry, an automated tailgate, an auto-dimming rear mirror and heated front seats, we’d recommend the XSE. The XSE extras are, of course, in addition to the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and automatic high-beam lighting.

Conclusion

The new Prius Prime has more power and higher fuel efficiency than the previous model. Lack of headroom in the backseat, no storage in the centre armrest, and an overcrowded instrument cluster. Time for some horsepower, a seamless switch from electric to petrol, and fantastic standard features.
