Mercedes-AMG SL63 Specifications & Features
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 may have the appearance of a sporty sports car, but it is more of a grand touring vehicle with a cutting-edge outfit. Although the SL’s handling is exciting enough, its booming V8 engine steals the show. The SL is available in two strengths, with the SL55 having 469 horsepower and the SL63 having 577 horsepower, even though all models have AWD and are powered by the same twin-turbo V8 engine. The SL’s cabin boasts plenty of elegance and high-tech equipment and can accommodate two adults. The SL has two tiny back seats even though Mercedes-AMG calls it a roadster. Legroom is constrained in the back seat, and headroom is also constrained when the convertible top is installed, so it’s best to use it for your tote bag or your shopping.
What’s New?
The second-generation SL-class roadster now has a new grey fabric roof option in addition to a two-tone white and black leather interior that is optional. Otherwise, there are no substantial revisions for the SL55 and SL63 in 2023. The SL-class is still only available as a 2-door convertible. To reduce weight and increase storage space, the new model sports a cloth roof rather than the intricate folding hardtop of the previous iteration. However, don’t anticipate a large trunk. Two small back seats can accommodate a single passenger on occasion, but that space is more appropriate for freight than passengers.
Mercedes-AMG SL63 Engine, Power, Performance & Acceleration
A twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 from the GT sports car powers both SL variants. The engine in the SL55 produces a strong 469 horsepower, but upgrading to the SL63 increases that output to a rumbling 577 horsepower. The single available gearbox is a nine-speed automatic, and all SL models come standard with an AWD system and four-wheel steering. Such drivetrains will enable the revitalized SL class to compete against more aggressive rivals like the Porsche 911 as well as convertible variants of the BMW 8-series and Lexus LC, both of which are available with potent V8 engines. With the more potent version of the V8 on board, acceleration is quick, and the SL63 reached 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds during testing.

Both the SL55 and SL63 variants of the SL received EPA ratings of 14 and 21 mpg for city and highway driving. The LC and 8-series with V8 engines are both rated at 25 mpg on the highway, outperforming the SL by a few mpg.

The new MBUX infotainment system from Mercedes is standard equipment in all SL variants. It includes the “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant and a sizable 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display that can be adjusted for viewing angle to suit the driver’s preferences. Additionally standard is a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. Also included are navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Burmester stereo systems are standard in all SLs, but an improved surround-sound model is available for the SL63.

All SL models come equipped with a variety of deluxe extras as standard equipment, such as head-up displays, Burmester sound systems, and massaging seats. To unleash the full potential of the twin-turbo V8, we’d opt for the more costly SL63. The SL55 and SL63 are both available in Touring and Performance versions, with the latter including a front axle lift feature (to help it pass speed bumps) and darkened exterior trim.
