Overview
The Nürburgring is a motorsports complex situated in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. This has a Grand Prix race track that was built in 1984 and has a capacity of 150,000 people. The Nordschleife track was built in the 1920s and is 12.943 miles long. The track has more than 1,000 feet of elevation change from its lowest to highest points. (Source : hotcars.com)
History
In the early 1920s, the races held on the 20.6 miles Nideggen public road circuit and a proposal to construct a dedicated race track came in 1925. The construction of this race tack started in September 1925 and took two years to complete. The first race held on 18 June 1927. The races paused during the world war and soon resumed in 1947. And this track has become the venue for the German Grand Prix as part of the Formula One World Championship.
In 1961 Phil Hill set a record with the Ferrari 156 by completing one lap in 8 minutes 55.2 seconds the first person to complete a lap under 9sec. Piers Courage a British racing driver witnessed a fatal crash during the race, this made other F1 drivers decide at the French Grand Prix to demand major changes to the track. As a result, many changes made to the track starting from 1971.
Races
This track has been accessible to the public from the time of built. Anyone can drive on the track with any kind of vehicle and it is open every day except when races happen. The modern-day races include DTM Championship, VLN Endurance race, FIM Superbike, and the ADAC GT. And the track has a lap record of 6:43.30 by Lars Kern with the Porsche 911 GT2 RS in 2021. And the second place belongs to Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with a time 6:43.62.
