2023 Honda Passport is a practical and nicely equipped mid-size SUV, with a generous amount of cargo space and passenger accommodations. But, unfortunately, it is not special. Those wanting for more than two rows of seats might make their step to the three-row Honda Pilot, the Passport’s first cousin. However, the Passport is pleasantly capable and practical in many ways. All models have a plethora of driver-assistance tech, from adaptive cruise control to lane-keeping assist. The sole powerhouse is a stout V6 which is not quite fuel-efficient, but it provides enough acceleration for city traffic. As it is never exciting to drive and its ride can be rough sometimes, the 2023 Passport is a largely satisfying and hassle-free way of shuttling families and all their gear.
What’s New?
For 2023, Honda addressed one of the biggest complaints about the Passport; its anonymous appearance. It now features a bolder front end, all thanks to that chunkier grille and squarer dimensions. Even, its front and rear bumpers look more rugged too. The new TrailSport model sports an off-road-inspired kind of vibe, further enhancing it is an exclusive 18-inch wheel-and-tire combo. Now, it has slightly wider front and rear tracks that the brand claims to improve stability. The rest of the lineup has more minimal updates that include a newly standard rear-seat reminder, and the EX-L trim now has contrast stitching on its leather seats.
Engine & Performance
Under the hood lies the same 280-hp 3.5-liter V6 paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission as found in the Pilot. Those who want the all-terrain capability of all-wheel drive can add it for an extra wad of cash; otherwise, the Passport is front-wheel drive as standard. The SUV has around 7.5 inches of ground clearance and 8.1 inches on all-wheel-drive models. Now, the Passport can even tow up to 5000 pounds. However, this two-row Honda gives a rough ride when it ventures off-road, and its high ride height contributes to a higher body-rolling demeanor. The SUV is quick on tests, jumping to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, as it dutifully accelerates on the highway. The ride is comfortable on most roads, and the steering is direct enough, making it feel nimble. There are 41 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seat, which can easily hold 15 carry-on suitcases.

As the SUV is offered in a single engine choice and either front- or all-wheel drive, it has two different EPA estimates. The FWD is expected to earn up to 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. While an AWD Passport makes it a little worse, with ratings of 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

All Passport models feature an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard. This also includes amenities such as Bluetooth and is complemented by a wireless phone charging pad. A seven-speaker audio system is offered on EX-L and TrailSport models, while an upgraded 10-speaker audio system is offered on the range-topping Passport Elite.

As the EX-L is technically the base model, it comes equipped with a plethora of desirable features such as leather upholstery, a sunroof, and a large touchscreen with smartphone-mirroring functionality. AWD is a $2000 option. The Passport can now be equipped with the Honda Performance Development (HDP) appearance package, which includes a unique grille, black fender flares, specific wheels, and an HDP graphic on the rear fenders.
