The MG M9 has created a lot of buzz since its launch earlier this year. It is the country’s first all-electric luxury MPV, and MG has placed it right between the Kia Carnival and the Toyota Vellfire in terms of price. At ₹69.90 lakh (ex-showroom), it promises the comfort and features of a premium people-mover without touching the sky-high price tag of the Vellfire. The big question, though, is whether it’s the right choice for you.
Price That Makes It Tempting
One of the M9’s strongest points is how MG has priced it. At just under ₹70 lakh, it’s far more affordable than the Toyota Vellfire, which costs between ₹1.22 crore and ₹1.32 crore. That’s a difference of more than ₹60 lakh. Compared to the Kia Carnival, though, the M9 is slightly pricier, the Carnival comes in at ₹63.91 lakh. But here’s the catch, the M9 comes only in a fully loaded single variant, which means you get everything the car has to offer without having to climb up trim levels.
Second Row Comfort is a Highlight
Luxury MPVs are all about comfort, especially in the middle row, and the M9 doesn’t disappoint. The second row comes with two captain seats that can recline, extend ottomans, and adjust in 16 different ways. They also come with heating, cooling, and massaging functions. Add in entertainment screens, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and a “boss mode” that pushes the front passenger seat forward for more legroom, and the M9 feels like a lounge on wheels.

Being fully electric, the M9 offers a very refined driving experience. It uses a 90kWh battery paired with a front-mounted motor that produces 245hp and 350Nm of torque. The result is strong performance without any engine noise, vibrations, or harshness. MG has also worked on cabin insulation, so road and wind noise are kept well in check. This makes the M9 a very peaceful place to be, whether you’re behind the wheel or in the back seat.
Range Isn’t Perfect for Long Trips
Now to the drawbacks. On paper, the M9 has a certified range of 548 km, which looks impressive. But in real-world conditions, especially on highways, that figure can drop closer to 300 km. For city driving and daily commutes, that’s more than enough. But for families who love road trips or intercity travel, the limited range combined with India’s patchy charging network could be a deal-breaker. In comparison, a hybrid like the Toyota Vellfire still feels safer for long-distance journeys.
Ride Quality Feels a Bit Firm
Another compromise comes in the way the M9 rides. MG has tuned the suspension on the firmer side, which helps keep the car stable at higher speeds. But at city speeds, especially on bumpy roads, the ride can feel a bit unsettled. Add to that the heavy battery pack under the floor, and some of the sharp bumps do make their way into the cabin. For a car aimed at comfort-seekers, this may be something buyers notice.
The MG M9 is a bold move by MG and an important step for India’s EV market. It offers unmatched comfort in the second row, impressive refinement thanks to its electric powertrain, and pricing that undercuts the Vellfire by a wide margin. For families who want a luxury MPV mainly for city use, with chauffeur-driven comfort and plenty of features, the M9 makes a lot of sense.
However, if your lifestyle involves frequent long-distance travel or if you value a cushier ride quality, rivals like the Toyota Vellfire or even the Kia Carnival might serve you better. Still, as India’s first electric luxury MPV, the MG M9 is a big leap forward and shows what the future of premium family cars could look like.
