Sports Utility Vehicle is the term used for the vehicles that combine road-going passenger cars which have off-roading capabilities. SUVs do not have any specific definition. Some say, any bulky-looking vehicle with four-wheel drive can be considered an SUV. While others say an SUV must be made on a lighter chassis and have high ground clearance.
1984 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is the first SUV in the modern style. Then in the 80s and 90s, the term SUV became very popular all over the world. Recently in the early 2010s compact SUVs, mid-size, and crossovers have become very popular. These vehicles built with a unibody construction rather than the body on frame construction. SUVs outperformed the highly popular sedans, in sales. Now these are 45.9% of the world’s passenger car market in 2021 as per the reports. Leaving the good side, there is also a bad side to these vehicles.
Criticized for having fewer safety features, and high exhaust pollutants with less fuel economy. The requirement for more resources to manufacture is always there than smaller vehicles.
And in the early days of making these vehicles, The manufacturers used to have many issues with the body design. As the vehicle’s high center of gravity increases the chance of rollovers of the vehicle. More blind spots and reduced visibility due to the bulky design of the body. Larger braking distance as the vehicle is heavy.
Over the years, making of SUVs got improved a lot and these vehicles are equipped with a huge number of advanced technology and safety features. And manufacturers are in a race to make their SUVs more advanced, powerful, and reliable.
