The fourth-generation Hyundai i20 has been spotted testing in Europe, giving fans an early glimpse of the hatchback’s updated design. While the overall shape still reminds us of the current model, the new i20 comes with fresh styling changes that bring it closer to Hyundai’s latest global design theme. Spy shots shared by Motor.es show sharper lines, redesigned body panels, and a number of premium touches that set it apart from the version currently sold in India.
Why India’s i20 Will Remain Small
In India, the Hyundai i20 has always benefited from the sub-4-metre tax break, and the next-generation model is expected to follow the same path. While the global version of the new i20 measures around 4,065mm in length, the India-specific model will likely be slightly shorter to stay within the compact car category. This move helps Hyundai keep the i20 more affordable for Indian buyers while allowing it to compete strongly against rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Tata Altroz. Hyundai has also confirmed that the new i20 will continue to come with petrol engine options, even as talk of an all-electric version continues to circulate.
Expect More Tech Inside

Although the interior of the next-generation i20 is still under wraps, Hyundai should unveil a number of interior updates in line with changing customer expectations. One of the key features may be the new curved display cluster that includes a big infotainment touchscreen and a digital driver’s instrument cluster. This has already been confirmed for the upcoming second-generation Hyundai Venue, and the i20 might be the next model to follow. There will be comfort and ease as major selling factors, with Hyundai expected to improve material comfort and seating quality to make the i20 feel more upscale than ever.
Engines That Still Pack a Punch
Internationally, the Hyundai i20 will likely carry forward its petrol and mild-hybrid petrol engines, modified to conform to more stringent emission regulations. In India, the new car will probably carry over the current 1.2-litre petrol engine that puts out 84hp, as well as the sportier 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine used in the N Line trim. Incidentally, Hyundai is also working on a new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that will first appear in the upcoming Hyundai Bayon. The engine is hybrid-ready, and there’s already speculation that it may debut in the Indian i20 range in the future.
When Can You Have It in India?
Industry reports indicate that Hyundai is set to launch the new i20 worldwide in 2027, with an India launch happening in the 2027–28 financial year. Indian consumers will witness the arrival of the Hyundai Bayon, an i20 platform-based crossover, before then, with showrooms expecting to receive it by mid-2026.
The Bayon will serve as a test case for Hyundai’s strategy in India, bridging the gap between compact hatchbacks and compact SUVs. Once the Bayon establishes its presence, the next-gen i20 will follow, ensuring Hyundai continues to dominate the premium hatchback space. With more aggressive styling, improved technology, and the potential of hybrid powerplants,
