What’s New?

Lightyear 0 is the game-changer EV, built by a Netherlands-based team. EVs are becoming the mainstream product, with major automakers running to electrify their lineups as early as the next decade. But the main concern is charging on the go, as EVs need to stop and re-charge which takes 10 times longer than refueling gas. However, this 2022 electric car can recharge itself while on the move.

Based on the Lightyear One prototype, the Lightyear 0 is the world’s first production-ready solar car. As the rise of EVs requires more powerful batteries and charging stations, it looks like Lightyear is going in the opposite direction. The Lightyear 0 offers more range with less battery, thus reducing weight and emissions. According to the brand, the car’s optimized solar roof can make it drive for weeks or months, without the need for charging, based on an estimated average commute of 22 miles. In tropical locations, the Lightyear 0 can operate for up to seven months, but in cloudy areas, the operational time reduces to two months.

Motor, Performance & Range

The car is powered by a 60kWh battery pack and four electric motors that produce 174 hp and 1720 Nm of torque. The vehicle’s 0-60 mph run time is 10 seconds, with a top speed of 100 mph which is certainly less than most EVs on the market. The vehicle has 388 miles of range, of which 44 miles can be derived from its solar panel technology.

The brand will only make 946 units, with each selling for $263,262. That high asking price could also be a tough task. For that money, you could probably buy a top-of-the-line electric car and install solar panels on your house and still have something remaining.
