2023 Land Rover Discovery is an overlanding vehicle for most wealthy families. As it continues Land Rover’s legacy of off-road capability but wraps it in a modern, premium, and elegant package. The cabin room is shared for seven across three rows of seats, although the third row is snug and best suited for kids. As for engine options, two turbocharged powerhouses are offered.
The base-level powertrain is a 296-hp four-pot and the upgrade engine is a smooth and refined 355-hp inline-six. On hitting the road, the Discovery provides a pleasing ride but other less adventurous rivals, such as the BMW X5, the Porsche Cayenne, and the Volvo XC90 are far more engaging to drive. However, those SUVs lack Land Rover’s heavier-duty off-roading gear, which includes an optional two-speed transfer case.

What’s New?
The Discovery lineup for 2023 gains a loaded Metropolitan Edition, complete with the 355-hp inline-six engine, unique 22-inch wheels, HUD, heated steering wheel, and heated seats for all three rows. The exterior is fitted with a unique grille, special emblems, and silver bumper inserts. On the inside, a new Titanium Mesh trim is inlayed on the dash and door panels. The mid-range R-Dynamic trim now comes with a black contrast roof as standard, while the rest of the lineup gains several new standard features.
Engine & Performance
Every Discovery model features a full-time AWD system as standard. But buyers can choose between a 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-pot or a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. the latter utilizes a 48-volt hybrid system. The Discovery with inline-six feels sprightly around town and delivers adequate pep for highway merging and passing. On testing, the six-pot Discovery made it to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
The Rover’s adventure-ready mission serves those seeking an SUV for much more than just trolling the city, but it comes at the expense of on-road dexterity. The Discovery’s handling isn’t as accurate as one might expect, but it still feels clumsy and top-heavy when changing direction. Overall, the ride quality is quite good, and even harsh bumps are dealt with easily. If towing a heavy load is on the mind, the Discovery is rated to tow up to 8200 pounds.

We would recommend getting the mid-range R-Dynamic model, as it offers the best value in the Discovery lineup. It sports fog lamps, LED taillights, aluminum interior trim, and uniquely styled front and rear bumpers. Base S and R-Dynamic models come standard with the turbo-four, but the R-Dynamic can be optioned with the more powerful inline-six-cylinder engine for $5550.
