A sleek and endearing sedan, the 2023 Volvo S60 offers a more relaxed driving experience than some sportier competitors. A BMW 3-series, a Genesis G70, or an Alfa Romeo Giulia are better choices for active drivers than Volvo’s entry-luxury sedan. The S60, however, will be a desirable ride for buyers who are more interested in a vehicle with a big, tastefully built inside that is lined with luxurious materials. Although the regular turbo-four engine is too mild-mannered for our liking, plug-in hybrid variants offer far better acceleration and a 22-mile range on electricity alone. The most athletic model is the S60 Polestar Engineered, which has 455 horsepower and additional performance-improving features.
What’s New?
New infotainment software and a facelift are added to the S60 range. Little design adjustments were made to the front and back bumpers, and some new wheel designs, which together make up the mild look improvements. A Google-based interface with updated graphics and a different menu layout than its predecessor is now available inside the S60’s sizable, vertically oriented touchscreen. Regrettably, compared to the previous system version, its on-screen symbols make it more difficult to use when moving. The S60 has changed from using the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trim level labels to a new structure of Core, Plus, and Ultimate models, much like the rest of the Volvo brand.
Engine & Performance
A front- or all-wheel drive system is available with the 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder in the non-hybrid S60. The Recharge plug-in hybrid with solely all-wheel drive now has 400 horsepower, and the leading Recharge Polestar Engineered is even wilder. The latter produces 523 pound-feet of torque and 455 hp. The Polestar edition, which includes adjustable dampers and unique 19-inch wheels, is only offered as a part of the Care by Volvo subscription plan. And in a comparative test against four-cylinder competitors, a less expensive S60 model came in last place because it drove less sportily than cars like the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the BMW 3-series. No, the S60 has a stronger preference for luxury over athletics.

Every S60 is equipped with a tablet-like entertainment system that uses a Google-based user interface. While we haven’t yet held one within the sedan, we have engaged with a model in the small, upscale XC60 SUV, and it was generally a positive experience. The system’s native speech assistant performs admirably, and we value the physical home button and sizable volume knob that are located at the bottom of the screen. However, this device lacks a tuning knob, just like far too many others. A Bowers & Wilkins premium music system is anticipated to be an option; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are anticipated to be standard.
