2023 Volvo S60 is an attractive and lovable sedan that delivers a more laid-back driving experience than other sporty rivals. Drivers who like to be engaged, rather than luxurious would prefer a BMW 3-series, Genesis G70, or an Alfa Romeo Giulia over Volvo’s entry-luxury sedan. But, nowadays, buyers are more interested in a car with a much roomy, exquisitely designed interior that’s covered with rich materials. They will find the S60 an attractive ride. Its standard turbo-four powertrain is too downcast for our tastes. However, the plug-in-hybrid versions provide much stronger acceleration and 22 miles of electric-only range. What’s New?
The S60 lineup received a facelift and new infotainment software. The appearance changes are subtle, with minor design tweaks made to the front and rear bumpers along with new wheel designs. Inside, the S60’s, vertically oriented touchscreen is large and now features a Google-based interface. This brings new graphics and a different menu structure than its predecessor. Interior cubby space is enough and useful through door pockets and a center console boasting a tray with a retractable cover and a handy bin below the armrest. The trunk manages to fit five carry-on suitcases, which is one less than the 3-series.
Engine & Performance
The non-hybrid S60 has a 247-hp turbocharged four-cylinder powering either front- or all-wheel drive. The power increases to 400 horsepower on an all-wheel-drive Recharge plug-in hybrid. Whereas, the top-of-the-line Recharge engineered by Polestar is even sportier. The latter makes 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. The chassis is equipped with adaptive dampers and floats on exclusive 19-inch wheels. The Polestar edition is only available as a part of the Care by Volvo subscription plan. In a comparison test against four-cylinder competitors, the more basic S60 model finished last due to its more subdued driving nature versus sportier alternatives such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia and BMW 3-series. Volvo show-offs its high build quality inside the S60, with more premium upscale materials throughout and very minute attention to detail. Its highlighting feature is a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, massaging front seats, and more.

The nonhybrid S60 is EPA-rated up to 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The plug-in-hybrid version has a 74 MPGe estimate and an electric-only drive range of 41 miles. Volvo is updating the Recharge T8 midway through the model year with a higher-capacity battery and a more powerful rear electric motor.

The S60 features a tablet-style infotainment system that operates through a Google-based interface. The system’s voice assistant works well, and both the physical home button at the bottom of the screen and the large volume knob is appreciated. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard; a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system is expected to be optional.

We’d recommend going for the sporty R-Design trim with all-wheel drive.
