The station wagon wasn’t invented by Volvo, but the company’s boxy people movers from the 1980s and 1990s kept the body type popular into the SUV era. One of the few remaining station wagons on the market today, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country expertly combines traditional long roof style, a raised ride height, and luxurious cabin accents to maintain its position at the top of the brand’s lineup alongside the XC90 SUV. Similar in design to the V90 are rival luxury wagons like the Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain and the Audi A6 Allroad, but neither can match the Scandinavian attractiveness of the V90. The V90 includes numerous driver-assistance features as standard equipment, including an automated emergency braking system with pedestrian recognition and an adaptive cruise control system with lane centering, just like previous Volvo vehicles, including the smaller but comparable V60 Cross Country.
What’s New?
This year, Volvo added additional Plus and Ultimate trim options to the V90 Cross Country. The palette also gains Black Stone, Bright Dusk Metallic, and Silver Dawn Metallic as three additional exterior hues. Apart from Mercedes-Benz, Volvo is the manufacturer that excels at creating luxurious interiors. The cosy and inviting cabins of the Swedish manufacturer make a strong case for the high prices of its waggons. They provide premium finishings, sophisticated design, and robust technology. Volvo’s automobiles stand out from the crowd thanks to features like the two-tone leather on the steering wheel, textured knobs, stunning open-pore wood, artistic speaker covers, and an infotainment screen in the form factor of a tablet.
Engine & Performance
The 48-volt hybrid system in the 2.0-liter, supercharged, and turbocharged B6 engine produces 295 horsepower. The large Volvo wagon managed a 6.4-second run to 60 mph on our test track thanks to its quite quick acceleration. Even faster was the E450 All-Terrain, reaching 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The V90 Cross Country is agile and exhibits great cornering competence despite not having a particularly sporty feel. But the ride is rougher than we would anticipate from a big luxury vehicle. The brakes are effective despite the pedal’s mushy sensation, and the V90 Cross Country stopped at 168 feet during the braking test at 70 to 0 mph.
Mileage
Volvo V90 Cross Country Mileage | City | Highway |
V90 Cross Country | 22 mpg | 29 mpg |
The V90 Cross Country boasts one of the greatest EPA fuel-economy ratings in the luxury-wagon market because to its small-displacement, forced-induction engine. According to the EPA, the new B6 powertrain in the V90 Cross Country should achieve 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the motorway.

Also standard are navigation, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and in-car Wi-Fi. Compared to the Sensus Connect system from prior model years, the new Google-based infotainment interface looks beautiful and is quick, but its smaller on-screen icons are trickier to press precisely while driving.

All Cross Country cars come standard with all-wheel drive and the B6 powertrain, but to access the most opulent amenities, we advise choosing the Ultimate grade.
