In the 2023 Volvo XC60, elegant design and thoughtful engineering come together to provide a standout alternative in the luxury-SUV class. The XC60’s interior is an exercise in well-tailored minimalism, similar to how its beautifully crafted appearance is—imagine Prada meeting IKEA. Three four-cylinder powertrains are available: the 247 horsepower B5, the 295 horsepower B6, and the 455 horsepower T8 plug-in hybrid. Depending on the powertrain you choose, all are moderately fuel-efficient and comfortable to drive, with performance ranging from vivacious to blazingly rapid. Volvo prioritizes technology as well and comes standard with well-known safety and driver-assistance systems. Other small SUVs are more useful, particularly the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, which both have larger cargo rooms. The Volvo makes up for these small flaws thanks to its spacious interior and appealing exterior.
What’s New?
For 2023, Volvo will replace its well-known Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trim levels with the nearly similar Core, Plus, and Ultimate trim levels. Core and Plus models are available with a Bright or Dark exterior motif, with the latter substituting high-gloss black exterior trim for external chrome. A few items have been moved around, like the air suspension, which is now only offered on the Ultimate trim, and new wheel designs are now available. Blond City Weave cloth fabric and Slate nappa leather have both been discontinued, and two new hues, Black Stone and Bright Dusk Metallic, are now available.
Engine & Performance
The XC60 comes with three distinct powertrains from Volvo: the B5, B6, and T8. Each is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Base B5-badged XC60 models come equipped with a 48-volt hybrid system and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 247 horsepower. The same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharger used in the B5 also powers the B6, but a supercharger has been added for extra power. It feels peppier than models with the standard B5 because it has 295 horses in its stable. For a total of 455 horsepower in the Recharge versions, the plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain combines the B6’s engine with a set of electric motors. While the Porsche Macan encourages hooliganism, the Volvo XC60 does not. The XC60 handles curves effectively, feels connected to the road while cruising, and changes directions with confidence.

A 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment panel that runs Volvo’s most recent Google-based software interface is standard on all XC60 models. The system features voice controls through the Google Assistant and a number of customisation choices. The software interface is responsive, but it takes some getting accustomed to because of its menus. Bluetooth connectivity, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot powered by a 4G LTE data connection, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all included as standard features.

The 2019 XC60’s 316-hp T6 powertrain impressed us with its lively performance, so the comparable 295-hp Plus B6 is our suggested purchase. With a host of new features becoming standard, the price premium over the base Core trim is justified in this case. Better wheels, leather upholstery, a 360-degree video system, and front and rear parking sensors are included with the Plus model.
