The 2024 Lexus LS premium sedan is the only vehicle in the Lexus lineup with the same pedigree. It has existed since the beginning of the brand, but since the first LS upended the luxury automobile market in 1990. Both its competitive advantage and attractiveness have diminished. Unlike the first LS, a Mercedes-Benz S-class knockoff, the most recent LS is a tough individualist with its take on luxury. The LS lacks a V-8 engine when the majority of other large luxury sedans at least provide one. Opting instead for a twin-turbo V-6 and a crude hybrid option. The LS has traditionally dressed conservatively and professionally, but the most recent generation has opted for a more expressive and aggressive look.

The 2024 LS is now compatible with an app that turns your smartphone into a digital key to lock/unlock the doors and even start the car. Go for the LS 500h and Lexus now provides an external power supply attachment that will come in handy in case of an emergency. The 2024 model also offers rear-wheel steering for the versions equipped with AWD as well. Going forward, Lexus will install a radiator support brace on select versions for increased body rigidity and improved steering response.
Lexus LS Engine, Power, Performance & Acceleration
Powering the LS is a refined 3.4-liter V-6, turbocharged for a seamless 416 horsepower output. When accelerating, it emits a robust yet subdued sound, transitioning to near silence during gliding moments. Managing the power delivery is a sophisticated 10-speed automatic gearbox that executes smooth gearshifts. The performance aligns aptly with the vehicle’s premium focus. Although on the test track, V-8 variants of the BMW 7-series and Mercedes-Benz S-class outpaced it. For the LS500h models, a hybrid drivetrain, comprising a 3.5-liter V-6 and two electric motors, delivers a combined 354 horsepower. This dynamic setup embodies Lexus’s commitment to marrying power and efficiency.
Although the conventional twin-turbo V-6 operates smoothly, the hybrid system lacks refinement and opulence. The transmission, combining a CVT with a standard four-speed automatic shift through preset gear ratios, lacks sharpness, akin to a soggy cornflake. The engine produces a scratchy, gritty sound. Notably, comfort has seen improvement with engineers adjusting both axles’ suspension, and the rubber component supporting the exhaust pipe has been repositioned to reduce vibrations. These enhancements collectively contribute to a more pleasant driving experience.

The LS500h’s powertrain’s only saving grace is if you want to save money at the pump. Are the fuel-economy estimates for the hybrid better than the nonhybrid LS500’s statistics? The rear-wheel-drive LS500 claims to get 30/19 mpg on the highway and city. However, the LS500h receives 33/25 mpg ratings from the EPA.

Keeping the rear-wheel drive and twin-turbocharged V-6 engine standard would save us money for the LS’s most exciting options. To add heated and cooled front and rear seats with semi-aniline leather upholstery, 28-way power-adjustable front seats with massage, rear bucket seats, a rear center console with touchscreen controls for climate, audio, and seat functions, four-zone automatic climate control, and power rear sunshades, we’d spring for the Luxury package, which is pricey but worthwhile. The Luxury package must be added to receive the optional adjustable air suspension, 20-inch wheels, a 360-degree video system, real wood interior decor, and a heated steering wheel with wood and leather accents.
