A new Off-Road Engineering option is now available for that model, adding underbody protection and an updated air suspension that can lift the SUV by an additional 1.2 inches for increased ground clearance.

There are two variants available, the eight-cylinder GLS580 and the six-cylinder GLS450, both of which include some hybridization. The 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged in the GLS450 is as smooth as polished granite and gains 375 horsepower for the 2024 model year. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 in the GLS580 produces 510 horsepower, making it significantly more potent. The 2020 GLS450 tested well, managing a quick 5.5-second sprint to 60 mph and a quick 154-foot stop from 70 mph. The GLS-Class is not athletic, yet it is easy to maneuver on a winding road despite its size. Air suspension is standard on all models, but Mercedes additionally adds a clever system known as E-Active Body Control. It uses a forward-facing camera to scan for bumps and then modifies the suspension so that riders experience fewer flaws on the road.

The GLS-Class’s fuel efficiency estimations from the EPA are subpar. The GLS450 gets 20 mpg overall, 18 mpg on the interstate, and 23 mpg in the city. With 16 mpg, 21 mpg, and 18 mpg, the GLS580 performs poorly. In terms of premium SUVs, the BMW X7 will be a superior option if fuel efficiency is important to you.
Dimensions & Space
The dashboard is dominated by two massive 12.3-inch digital panels. One conducts infotainment functions and runs Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX software, which includes a virtual assistant similar to the iPhone. The other does infotainment chores. Standard features include an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, in-dash navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. All GLS versions come standard with a 13-speaker Burmester Surround Sound stereo, but if you feel that’s not enough, a crazy 26-speaker Burmester 3D audio system is also an option.

We would recommend sticking with the GLS450 and using the extra money to get some upgrades because the turbocharged inline-six in that vehicle has just as much power and smoothness as the V-8 in the GLS580. With the addition of massaging seats, wireless phone charging, a tablet controller for the GLS’s infotainment system, and plusher headrests, the Executive Rear Seat Plus kit transforms the second row into a Sybarite haven. With side-impact airbags, the level of safety is also increased. You must pay extra for leather upholstery if you get that package because it isn’t a standard.
