The 2024 Toyota Tacoma emerges as a formidable contender in the mid-size truck segment, rivalling the likes of the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado. The lineup’s diversity shines through with two cab and bed configurations. Powering the Tacoma is a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. With the hybrid iForce Max variant delivers an impressive 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque outclassing competitors. In contrast, the mid-size Nissan Frontier, while not as potent as the full-size Titan, presents a newer and more affordable option. Equipped with a robust 310-hp V6. Outperforming the Honda Ridgeline, and coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the Frontier offers commendable power. Two cab options, the extended King Cab and the larger crew cab, provide flexibility. With standard RWD and optional 4WD, the Frontier distinguishes itself.

Every Tacoma runs on a turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder engine, available in various configurations. It pairs with either an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual, catering to both RWD and 4WD options. The base SR features a 228-hp turbo four, while the remaining lineup boasts more potent iForce versions, reaching up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The top-tier iForce Max, exclusive to automatic transmissions, dominates with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. This powerhouse is a hybrid, incorporating an electric motor and a small nickel-metal hydride battery between the engine and transmission.
Price & Mileage
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes with a starting price of $32,995, and the cost is anticipated to reach $65,000 for the high-end TRD Pro model. However, specific pricing details for the top two trims have not been disclosed by Toyota as of now. The EPA has not officially rated the fuel economy of the new Tacoma yet, but Toyota’s estimates suggest it will achieve approximately 18 to 21 mpg in city driving and 23 to 26 mpg on the highway.
Acceleration & Features
While all Tacomas have a sturdy body-on-frame build, they come with two different rear suspensions. The SR, SR5 extended cab, and TRD PreRunner use traditional leaf springs, while the others have newer coil springs, especially the models with these coils, providing a much better ride compared to the older leaf spring setup. Moving on to infotainment, an 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard in most Tacomas, but the Limited model steps it up with a larger 14.0-inch touchscreen. This bigger screen is also featured in the Trailhunter and TRD Pro. All models come with built-in wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, there’s an option for a wireless charging pad and a JBL audio system. Interestingly, the JBL system includes a Bluetooth speaker that can be detached from the dashboard’s top.

The Frontier receives Nissan’s new naturally aspirated 3.8L V6, initially introduced in the last-generation 2020 model. This engine boasts 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, available in both RWD and 4WD configurations. The Frontier demonstrates improved steering responsiveness and various chassis enhancements, contributing to a more composed and refined driving experience. While the truck’s towing capacity reaches a maximum of 6720 pounds, it falls behind competitors like the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Jeep Gladiator, all capable of pulling at least 7650 pounds. The Nissan’s maximum payload stands at 1610 pounds.
Price & Mileage
The SV trim strikes the right balance of standard features and value for us. The Frontier has a starting price of $31,265 for the S trim, reaching up to $42,095 for the Hardbody Edition. In terms of fuel efficiency, the RWD Frontier is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Opting for 4WD brings these figures down slightly to 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
Acceleration & Features
The V6 in the Frontier delivers sufficient power and operates smoothly. The infotainment system in the new Frontier is controlled through either an 8.0-inch standard touchscreen or an optional 9.0-inch one. Physical knobs for adjusting the stereo’s volume and tuning settings are conveniently located below the screen. Standard connectivity features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and multiple charging outlets, including a USB-C port. For additional convenience, the Frontier offers a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and the option for wireless smartphone charging. If you’re an audiophile, you can upgrade to a nine-speaker Fender sound system for an extra cost.
