Chip Shortage Likely To Stay After 2023: GM CEO Mary Barra

The time has never been more difficult than it is now for the automobile sector currently. Automakers are forced to sell their vehicles at high prices and are removing several features. This all started when the Covid-19 pandemic happened and the world took a pause due to lockdowns everywhere. The automotive sector took a big hit during the pandemic due to the chip shortage. Carmakers removed many key components from the cars including some vital features. We’re almost at the recovery phase many months after the pandemic and the problem still resides. According to GM CEO Mary Barra, the global chip shortage will not be over even after 2023.

In an interview with CBS Mornings, Mary Barra have a sneak peek, a preview of the upcoming 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV. She said that the semiconductor and supply chain issues are the main reason for the slow production and are a major problem currently. Barra also said that the chip shortage will continue for two years and maybe after that after a reporter asked her about it. GM is working to solve the problem caused by the parts shortage. The carmaker is locally sourcing the raw materials from the US ad other countries to avoid similar problems for its EVs.

Barra also said that Tesla is not the motivation of their production ramp for EVs when Gayle King asked her about it. Mary stated the Chevrolet Bolt EV, a car that Chevy brought in 2016 had record sales in August. So it would be unlikely when people say if the company’s motivation is Tesla or not.
