2023 Hyundai Tucson is previewed by the Vision T concept at the 2019 LA auto show, and the SUV sports a daring new design that looks destined to churn out the compact-SUV marketplace. The entry-level Tucson is powered by a more traditional 2.5-liter four-pot gasoline ICE shared with the Sonata sedan. But, both a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid are also offered as well. The Tucson was redesigned in 2022 from stem to stern. This incorporates the company’s new design language for a bolder look. AWD is standard in the electrified powertrains, both paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The nonhybrid Tucson offers enough muscle for both city driving and highway maneuvering. But lead-footed drivers will ask for more power. On testing, the AWD Limited jumped to 60 mph in 8.8 seconds. The more powerful hybrids feel quicker, but expecting Toyota RAV4 Prime level acceleration from them is a sin. As the Tucson is no sports car, its handling is confident, and its steering is reasonably accurate The most striking thing about Tucson is how refined it feels when cruising.

The EPA estimated that the nonhybrid version of the Tucson can deliver as high as 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway with FWD. While fuel efficiency ratings for the hybrid are as high as 38 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. The plug-in hybrid model sports a 13.8-kWh battery pack that can offer up to 33 miles of electric-only driving, as per the EPA.

As standard, the SUV sports an 8.8-inch touchscreen integrated into the dashboard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While a larger 10.3-inch screen with built-in navigation is optional. Features such as SiriusXM satellite radio, an upgraded Bose stereo system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot will likely be offered as well, but as an option.

We would recommend getting the SEL Convenience variant, as it offers a great combination of features and price. It comes with heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, and a 10.3-inch digital gauge display as standard. The sporty N Line model is also available for the first time, as is a rugged XRT model, but buyers hoping for a high-performance turbocharged four-pot will be disappointed to learn that opting for either of these amounts to nothing more than an appearance package.
