BYD Seal India Launch Set for March 5, Bookings Open

BYD Seal is making its way into the Indian markets on March 5 with unofficial bookings already in motion

BYD’s upcoming launch for the Indian market, the Seal EV, has been spotted in the country for the first time. Unofficial bookings for the electric sedan have now begun. The BYD Seal EV made its debut last year in India at the 2023 Auto Expo and its official launch will happen on March 5, 2024. In the latest development, the BYD Seal has been sighted in India with minimal camouflage.

This will mark the Chinese EV maker’s third model introduction to the Indian market. The unofficial bookings for the Seal EV have commenced offering two battery pack options globally. It will compete with models like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 in India and it will also rival the upcoming Hyundai IONIQ 6 which is expected to launch next year.

The Seal EV offers two powertrain configurations: a single-motor setup available with both battery packs and a dual-motor setup exclusive to the larger battery pack option. The India-spec variant will feature the dual motor all-wheel-drive setup, delivering a power output of 530 bhp, with a claimed 0-100 kmph timing of just 3.8 seconds.

Battery & Range

The smaller 61.2 kWh battery pack claims a range of up to 500 kilometres on a single charge, while the larger 82.5 kWh unit boasts a range of up to 700 kilometres. Utilizing the brand’s Blade battery pack, the former supports up to 110kW DC fast charging while the latter can be charged at a maximum capacity of 150kW.

In terms of dimensions, the Seal EV measures 4,800mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,460mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920mm. The sedan follows the brand’s ‘Ocean Aesthetics’ design direction along with the ‘Seal’ ocean-inspired nomenclature. Inside the cabin, it will feature a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display.

Pricing & India Launch

As for pricing, the BYD Seal EV will launch with a starting price of around Rs. 50 lakh (ex-showroom), potentially making a significant impact in the premium electric vehicle segment in India. It will compete with cars such as the BMW i4 electric sedan and other electric sedans in the segment. Potentially, the upcoming Tesla Model 3 it break into the Indian automotive market.
