BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle giant is set to make a splash in the Indian market with the imminent launch of its third offering, the Seal. This sleek sedan arrives as a full import, and with unofficial bookings already underway, excitement is brewing amongst potential buyers. The Seal’s design draws inspiration from BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” philosophy, evident in the Ocean X concept from 2021. The car inherits ocean-themed design cues, evident in the coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, and distinctive lighting elements. The front features four boomerang-shaped LEDDRLs flanking a split headlamp design. While the rear boasts a full-width LED light bar.

Stepping inside the Seal reveals a driver-centric environment brimming with technology. The centrepiece is a captivating 15.6-inch rotating infotainment display, complemented by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. The floating touchscreen sits amidst the central AC vents, with the drive selector and a scroll wheel for drive mode selection positioned below. Additional features include a heated windscreen control, audio system volume control, and two wireless charging pads for added convenience.

Performance and Range:

The BYD Seal in India will boast an impressive 82.5 kWh battery pack and offers a claimed WLTP range of 570 km in the rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration. Powering this variant is a permanent magnet synchronous motor generating 230 hp and 360 Nm of torque. It can propel the 2,055 kg Seal from 0 to 100 km/h in a brisk 5.9 seconds. BYD’s renowned Blade battery technology ensures safety and efficiency. It supports fast charging speeds of up to 150 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in just 37 minutes. These specifications pertain to the entry-level RWD variant. Sources hint at a possible introduction of a dual-motor AWD variant that will offer 530 hp and a claimed range of 520 km.

The BYD Seal is expected to be priced around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it directly in competition with the established Hyundai Ioniq 5, currently priced at Rs 45.95 lakh. Both vehicles offer comparable features and performance. The Ioniq 5boastsg has a slightly longer claimed range (630 km) and a slightly lower power output (217 hp) in its RWD configuration.
