While both models share many similarities, they also have some key differences that set them apart. The EQS is a technological marvel and should be at the top of your list if you’re in search of the most sophisticated luxury car. Equipped with the latest and greatest technology, including Benz’s gigantic Hyperscreen touchscreen, and driver profiles based on fingerprint scans, the EQS is the electric version of the S-class. However, the spacious, slicked-back EQS luxury sedan is being replaced by the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, which has identical wheelbases and shares a common platform. The SUV boasts a third row with room for up to seven people, making it the only model with this feature.

A lithium-ion battery pack with a useful capacity of 107.8 kWh is standard equipment on all EQS variants. The EQS580’s range is rated at 340 miles by the EPA, whereas the EQS450+’s at 350 miles. The EQS can reportedly recharge 70% of its battery—from 10% to 80%—with a DC fast charger in addition to being able to charge the battery from 10% to 100% in roughly 11 hours and 15 minutes using a 240-volt (Level 2) charger.

Three various body types, three different powertrain options, and three different trim levels are all available for the 2023 EQS sedan. It is advised to have the top Pinnacle grade in the EQS450+ rear-wheel drive configuration. Which includes amenities like heated and ventilated front and back seats, massaging front-seat occupants, four-zone automated climate control, a head-up display, and more. The base powertrain provides ample punch despite only having 329 horsepower. The 4MATIC model offers an impressive increase in power from the rear-drive car’s 417 pound-feet to 590 pound-feet and 355 horsepower from 329. During testing, the EQS450+’s acceleration from 0 to 60 mph took 5.4 seconds. The quicker EQS580 accelerated to 60 mph in just under 3.7 seconds. Every EQS rides on an adjustable air suspension and rolls on rims that range in diameter from 19 to 21 inches. The MBUX infotainment system, particularly the 56-inch-long Hyperscreen, is one of the EQS’s interior features that stands out the most. Unlike the standard configuration, which is a tablet-like touchscreen that stretches from the center console and floats over the dashboard, the optional Hyperscreen operates as a single huge display that merges three independent panels.

However, the EQS450+ is no slouch, and we anticipate that most drivers will find its power to be more than sufficient. Given the EQS SUV’s focus on luxury, we don’t find the handling to be especially pleasant and the steering feedback to be excessive, but we do find the on-road comfort and relaxation to be acceptable. The EQS SUV’s estimated driving range isn’t as spectacular as that of the EQS sedan while using the same 107.8-kWh battery pack. The base EQS450+ model claims to have a range of 305 miles on a single charge, whereas the all-wheel-drive EQS450 4Matic and EQS580 4Matic models claim to have a range of about 285 miles. Fortunately, when connected to a suitable DC fast-charger, the EQS SUV can charge at rates of up to 200 kW, which Mercedes claims will increase the battery’s capacity from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes.
Pricing & Mileage
Although the starting price of an EQS SUV is surprisingly close to that of an EQS sedan, we don’t think many customers will choose to stay with the base EQS450+ model. Not when the more potent EQS580 4Matic versions are available. The EQS450+ still comes with a tonne of desired standard amenities, like a Burmester sound system, rear-axle steering, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and more. The EQS580 4Matic Exclusive model, which includes an all-wheel drive powertrain and upscale options like a head-up display, four-zone automatic climate control, and massaging front seats, is what we would advise. Depending on the powertrain setup, the EPA ratings for the 2023 EQS SUV series vary. The EQS450+ is rated at 85 MPGe combined; the 4Matic all-wheel-drive version gets 78 MPGe. The EQS580 has a combined EPA rating of 77 MPGe.
Acceleration & Features
In contrast to the sedan, the SUV has an Off-Road drive mode that elevates the suspension and modifies the behavior of the motor. We observed much more vivacious acceleration throughout testing and project a 4.2-second sprint to 60 mph for the EQS580. The EQS SUV may be outfitted with Mercedes’ mesmerizing 56-inch Hyperscreen, which spans the entire width of the dashboard, for maximum theatre.
