Mercedes-Benz has launched the CLA Electric as its new entry-level offering in India, bringing serious EV credentials to a competitive price point. While it has no direct rival at its exact price, the BYD Seal sits close enough to warrant a proper comparison. One promises badge value, cutting-edge charging technology, and class-leading range. The other offers more performance per rupee and a wider variant lineup. Here is how they stack up on paper.
Dimensions
The Seal is bigger, but the CLA Electric carries more luggage
| Specification | Mercedes CLA Electric | BYD Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Length (mm) | 4,723 | 4,800 |
| Width (mm) | 1,855 | 1,875 |
| Height (mm) | 1,468 | 1,460 |
| Wheelbase (mm) | 2,790 | 2,920 |
| Boot Space (litres) | 405 | 400 |
| Frunk Space (litres) | 101 | 53 |
| Wheel Size (inches) | 18-19 | 18-19 |
| Turning Radius (metres) | 5.6 | 5.7 |
The BYD Seal is the larger car across nearly every dimension, with a 77mm longer body, a 20mm wider stance, and a notably larger 130mm wheelbase advantage. However, the CLA Electric fights back on practicality. It offers a 5-litre larger boot and a frunk that is nearly double the size of the Seal’s 53-litre unit, giving it a real-world luggage edge despite its smaller footprint.
Both cars offer the same 18 to 19-inch wheel size range, though the CLA Electric’s 19-inch wheels are exclusive to the Launch Edition variant. The CLA Electric also holds a marginal turning radius advantage, partly because of its shorter overall length.
Powertrains and Performance

The Seal offers more power, more variants, and an AWD option
| Specification | Mercedes CLA Electric | BYD Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Options (kWh) | 58 / 85 | 61.44 / 82.56 / 82.56 |
| Motor Setup | Rear / Rear | Rear / Rear / Front + Rear |
| Power (hp) | 224 / 272 | 204 / 313 / 530 |
| Torque (Nm) | 335 / 335 | 310 / 360 / 670 |
| Gearbox | 2-speed | 1-speed |
| Drive Layout | RWD / RWD | RWD / RWD / AWD |
| Kerb Weight (kg) | 2,045 / 2,055 | 1,922 / 2,055 / 2,185 |
| 0-100 kph Claimed (sec) | 7.5 / 6.7 | 7.5 / 5.9 / 3.8 |
At the entry level, the CLA Electric produces 20hp and 25Nm more than the base Seal. Yet despite the Seal being a larger car with a bigger battery, its base variant is 123kg lighter, which is why both cars claim an identical 7.5 second 0-100 kph time.
The higher-spec variants tell a different story. The Seal’s 82.56kWh RWD model makes 41hp more than the equivalent CLA Electric and completes the 0-100 kph sprint 0.8 seconds quicker. Then there is the Seal Performance AWD, which produces a staggering 530hp and 670Nm and sprints to 100 kph in just 3.8 seconds. The CLA Electric has no equivalent.
Where the CLA Electric has a genuine technical advantage is its 2-speed gearbox, a first in this segment. The lower ratio delivers strong acceleration off the line, while the higher ratio improves efficiency at cruising speeds.
Range and Charging
A clear and convincing win for the CLA Electric
| Specification | Mercedes CLA Electric | BYD Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Options (kWh) | 58 / 85 | 61.44 / 82.56 / 82.56 |
| WLTP Range (km) | 542 / 792 | 460 / 570 / 520 |
| Max DC Charging Speed (kW) | 200 / 320 | 110 / 150 |
| DC Charge Time (10-80%) | 20 / 22 minutes | 45 minutes (0-80%) |
The CLA Electric dominates this category without contest. Even its base 58kWh variant claims 82km more WLTP range than the Seal’s comparable 61.44kWh model. At the top end, the gap stretches to a massive 222km in the CLA Electric’s favour.
The charging story is equally one-sided. The CLA Electric uses an 800V architecture supporting DC charging speeds of up to 320kW, more than double the Seal’s maximum of 150kW. At their respective peak charging speeds, the CLA Electric goes from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes, while the Seal takes 45 minutes to reach 80 percent from zero.
Price Comparison
The Seal is significantly more affordable across the board
| Mercedes CLA Electric | Price | BYD Seal | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 Standard Range | Rs 55 lakh | Dynamic | Rs 41 lakh |
| 250+ Long Range | Rs 59 lakh | Premium | Rs 45.7 lakh |
| 250+ Launch Edition | Rs 64 lakh | Performance AWD | Rs 53.15 lakh |
The numbers are stark. The entry-level Seal Dynamic is Rs 14 lakh cheaper than the base CLA Electric. The top-spec Seal Performance AWD, with its 530hp and 3.8 second sprint, is still priced below even the cheapest CLA Electric variant. For buyers focused purely on performance per rupee, the Seal is the obvious winner.
Pros and Cons
| Mercedes CLA Electric | BYD Seal | |
|---|---|---|
| Pros | Superior range across all variants | More affordable across all variants |
| 800V fast charging architecture | 530hp AWD variant available | |
| Innovative 2-speed gearbox | Lighter base variant | |
| Larger frunk and boot | Wider variant choice | |
| Cons | Considerably more expensive | Slower charging speeds |
| No AWD option available | Significantly shorter range | |
| Heavier base variant | No 2-speed gearbox sophistication |
These two EVs serve different kinds of buyers. The BYD Seal is the right choice if you want maximum performance for your money, with the option of a genuinely rapid AWD variant that undercuts even the base CLA Electric on price. The Mercedes CLA Electric, however, wins decisively on range and charging speed, and brings genuine technological innovation with its 800V architecture and 2-speed gearbox. If badge value and long-distance capability matter to you, the CLA Electric justifies its premium. If outright value and performance are the priority, the Seal is hard to argue against.
