Toyota Mirai Specifications & Features
The 2023 Toyota Mirai is a niche vehicle inside a niche market since it is an electric vehicle that runs on hydrogen. Its fuel-cell powerplant, which generates 182 horsepower and has a range of more than 400 miles before needing a hydrogen refill, is as unexpected as its stylish exterior and opulent interior. Although it’s not as speedy as EV competitors who recharge their batteries at charging stations, the Mirai at least provides a smooth ride and responsive handling. Why aren’t more of these being purchased by motorists? Because only California currently has a functional infrastructure of hydrogen fuelling stations, the appeal of both the Mirai and its main competition, the Hyundai Nexo, is severely constrained.
What’s New?
For the Mirai in 2023, nothing has changed. Even the cost of the electric automobile running on hydrogen is unchanged from the previous year. The Mirai has a stylish interior to go with its swoopy design. The dash and door panels feature various curved components that are highlighted by copper-colored trim pieces, although the upper portion of the dashboard is dominated by the big infotainment screen and nearly all-digital instrumentation. It has a futuristic and opulent design befitting of a vehicle with a $50,000 starting price. Even more luxuries than the base XLE are included in the more expensive Limited model, such as a sunroof, heated and ventilated front and back seats, three-zone automatic temperature control, and more.
Toyota Mirai Motor, Power & Performance
The Toyota Mirai uses a fuel-cell electric powertrain, in which the onboard fuel cell transforms hydrogen into energy. Basically a mobile laboratory for chemicals. The 182 horsepower generated by the Mirai’s electric powertrain is sent to the rear wheels via a direct-drive transmission. Even though Toyota claims the Mirai takes just 9.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, when cruising through town, it actually feels more vivacious than that. A surprising amount of agility is also delivered by the rear-wheel drive chassis while maintaining a smooth and composed ride.

The EPA hasn’t released estimates for the 2023 Mirai’s fuel economy yet, but according to Toyota, the Mirai is good for up to 402 miles per fill-up of hydrogen. This matches the EPA’s estimated range for the 2022 XLE model, which is rated at 76 MPGe city and 71 MPGe highway. Fuel economy figures for the 2022 Limited model fall to 67 in the city and 64 on the highway.

A sizable 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard on the Mirai. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 14-speaker JBL music system, SiriusXM satellite radio, and in-dash navigation.

Toyota provides two trim levels for the Mirai: base XLE and loaded Limited. We recommend sticking with the less expensive of the two. Keyless entry and ignition, heated and power-adjustable seats, faux-leather upholstery, and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen are all included as standard inside features. For times when travel necessitates travels outside of regions with hydrogen fuelling stations, all Mirai cars come with a $15,000 fuel credit and 21 days of free car rentals.

Conclusion
The Mirai is a gorgeous Toyota with luxury on par with Lexus, but its unusual fuel source prevents it from becoming widely adopted. Beautiful bodywork, a classy driving style, and a large driving range. Limited hydrogen availability, high beginning price, and slower acceleration than comparable electric cars reduce its appeal.
