The 2023 Toyota Mirai is a niche vehicle inside a niche market since it is an electric vehicle that runs on hydrogen. Its fuel-cell powerplant, which generates 182 horsepower and has a range of more than 400 miles before needing a hydrogen refill, is as unexpected as its stylish exterior and opulent interior. The Toyota Mirai uses a fuel-cell electric powertrain, in which the onboard fuel cell transforms hydrogen into energy. Basically a mobile laboratory for chemicals. The 182 horsepower generated by the Mirai’s electric powertrain is sent to the rear wheels via a direct-drive transmission. Even though Toyota claims the Mirai takes just 9.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, when cruising through town, it actually feels more vivacious than that. A surprising amount of agility is also delivered by the rear-wheel drive chassis while maintaining a smooth and composed ride.

The EPA hasn’t released estimates for the 2023 Mirai’s fuel economy yet, but according to Toyota, the Mirai is good for up to 402 miles per fill-up of hydrogen. Fuel economy figures for the 2022 Limited model fall to 67 in the city and 64 on the highway.

Conclusion

The Mirai is a gorgeous Toyota with luxury on par with Lexus, but its unusual fuel source prevents it from becoming widely adopted. Beautiful bodywork, a classy driving style, and a large driving range. Limited hydrogen availability, high beginning price, and slower acceleration than comparable electric cars reduce its appeal.
