10 Tech Companies In The World Race To Build EVs

Overview

EVs first came into existence in the mid-19th century. In 1990, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, a two-seater concept electric vehicle was introduced by General Motors President it was named the “Impact“. From 1996 to 1998 GM produced 1117 EV1s and discontinued them.

The EVs were reintroduced in the late 20th and early 21st century. As the environmental impact of petroleum-based transportation has gotten worse and also with the increased prices of fuel. Automobile Manufacturers are showing more interest in electric vehicles than the complicated conventional IC engines. As everyone are preferring to buy the EVs these days. And these vehicles have become no less than conventional vehicles. In terms of power and comfort, in fact, EVs are way ahead of conventional vehicles.

With the increase in demand for electric vehicles in the market, not only the Automobile manufacturers but also a few tech companies are making plans to launch their EVs.

1. Sony

This company is developing Vision-S. This concept was first revealed at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas the second concept was revealed at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) as the Vision-S 02.

The first model is a 4-Door sedan and the company claimed that the vehicle can accelerate from 0–62 mph in the time of 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 150 mph. Whereas the second model is a 7-seat SUV.

2. Apple

This electric vehicle which is being developed by Apple is codenamed, Titan and is expected to launch between 2024 to 2028. There was some news that Apple is planning to design a vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals which would look similar to the lifestyle vehicle from Canoo.

3. Alibaba Group

This tech company along with SAIC Motor (a Chinese automobile manufacturer) and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech formed a company named IM Motors in December 2020. It is known that company is working to develop a sedan that can compete with Tesla Model S. And the company released two production models and two concepts at the Auto Shanghai show in 2021.

4. Xiaomi

This leading Chinese mobile manufacturer announced that the company is planning to launch four electric vehicle models. Two models with Level2+ autonomous driving and in the price range of $22,264 to $29,650 USD. While the other two models support Level 3 autonomous driving and have a price range of $29,650 to $44,530 USD.

5. Foxconn

Foxconn and Yulon Group( a Taiwan automaker) formed the company Foxtron in 2020 for electric vehicle research, development, and manufacturing. They introduced three electric vehicles . The Model C SUV, the Model E sedan, and the Model T electric bus, on Hon Hai Tech Day 2021.

6. Baidu

This is a Chinese multinational technology company and is also considered China’s Google. Baidu formed a startup named Jidu to manufacture electric vehicles and the company has officially revealed its AI-powered, robotic EV, named the ROBO-01. Its interactive AI is one of the most exciting things about this vehicle. This AI voice interaction system includes external voice recognition where the vehicle can communicate with the human.

7. Waymo LLC

This company was formed in 2009 as the Google Self-Driving Car Project. This company is now made a partnership with Geely to make this EV. And it is known that Geely’s premium electric mobility brand Zeekr will be working for Waymo. This vehicle also will not have any steering wheel or pedals just like the upcoming Apple EV.

8. Oppo

Another top mobile manufacturer on the list. Oppo hasn’t made any partnerships with any automobile manufacturer and there were no clues about the vehicle they are planning to make. The only thing known reportedly is they have no time to waste. And wanted to release this vehicle in 2024 before Apple launches its EV. Indian markets are the primary targets of this vehicle.

9. Huawei

This tech company has already launched its vehicle in the market which is named SF5. This was initially revealed as a concept in 2018. And the production of this vehicle began in 2019. The company released two models. One with two-wheel drive and has one motor, the other with four-wheel drive and has two motors. This vehicle could produce a maximum power of 116 horsepower.

10. Didi

This company has already launched an electric hatchback the model D1. This company is in the plan of building a completely autonomous electric vehicle. Around 1,700 employees are working on the project as per the reports. June 2023 is the estimated date of release of this vehicle. The price tag of the Ev is $23,580
