Tata Motors to unveil 2 brand new cars with the segment’s first turbo CNG engines

Tata Motors is gearing up to launch two new CNG cars in India. The company is set to introduce several new models this calendar year. The production-spec Tata Curvv was unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in Delhi earlier.

Tata Motors unveiled the Nexon iCNG concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. It highlights the company’s twin-cylinder technology that came in the Tata Altroz and the Tata Punch iCNG models. Tata will launch its Nexon iCNG in the upcoming months. This model will represent India’s first turbocharged petrol CNG offering in the segment rivalling other carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki.

The Tata Curvv, which was showcased as a prototype with a diesel engine, is set to debut with an electric version first, followed by the internal combustion engine (IC-engined) variant later this year. The midsize SUV coupe is expected to offer a range exceeding 500 km on a single charge and will be available in single and dual motor configurations. Additionally, there are speculations that the ICE Tata Curvv could also come in a CNG specification either at launch or in the near future.

The electric version will feature a new generation 1.2L three-cylinder turbo DI petrol engine, producing around 125 PS and 225 Nm of torque, while the diesel variant will likely use the same 1.5L turbo diesel engine found in the Nexon, delivering 115 PS and 260 Nm. Both manual and automatic transmission options will be offered.

If the speculations are accurate, the CNG variant of the Tata Curvv will compete with CNG-spec models like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder. The twin-cylinder technology will allow for packaging advantages, ensuring that boot space is not compromised. The SUV coupe design will provide a spacious trunk with a notchback-like finish.

In terms of competition, the ICE Curvv will rival models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Astor. On the other hand, the EV variant will compete with upcoming electric SUVs like the Hyundai Creta EV and Citroen eC3 Aircross.
