Back in 2001, the original Ford Escape embraced a rugged image, featuring tough looks, optional V-6 power, and an advanced all-wheel drive system. Today, the Bronco Sport, sharing the same platform, takes on the off-road SUV market for Ford. While the similarly sized 2023 Ford Escape PHEV adopts a more laid-back approach. It comes with front-wheel drive as standard and optional all-wheel drive, but the overall package lacks ruggedness. The Escape offers a plug-in version and a choice between turbocharged three- or four-cylinder engines. Its design is attractive, and the interior provides ample space for passengers and cargo, though it lacks a luxurious touch. Performance is decent for its class, but if you prioritize the joy of driving. You might prefer livelier competitors like the Mazda CX-50 and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Ford has introduced an enticing makeover to the Escape for the 2023 model. Showcasing a captivating new front end with a broader grille, proudly displaying the brand’s ovoid logo. Not stopping there, they’ve refined the hood and front bumper and added a delightful array of fresh wheel designs for an enhanced side view. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version now stands as its distinct trim, while all models have made the switch from Sync 3 to Sync 4, offering advanced infotainment features. The Sync 4 system even allows convenient over-the-air updates. And for those seeking more, there’s an optional, larger 13.2-inch infotainment display. As a cherry on top, all models are equipped with an 8.0-inch digital gauge display, and some select models offer an even more impressive 12.3-inch unit.
Ford Escape PHEV Engine, Power, Performance & Acceleration
Once again, the hybrid powertrain links a 2.5-liter inline-four engine to two electric motors through a planetary gearset, enabling continuously variable ratios. The combined power amounts to 210 horsepower, slightly lower than the 2022 version by 11 horsepower. While driving the Escape as an electric vehicle in urban areas, the traction motor delivers smooth and sufficient acceleration. However, the SUV lacks enthusiasm when merging onto highways or overtaking other vehicles. It takes a leisurely 7.7 seconds for this Escape to reach 60 mph. More than a second behind the Outlander and significantly slower than the RAV4’s 5.4-second acceleration.
Despite having a smaller lithium-ion battery compared to its rivals. The Escape efficiently maximizes its usage, granting an EPA-estimated electric driving range of 37 miles. The suspension, while relatively stiff, could use improvement in smoothing out bumps. But it doesn’t translate to sporty handling or substantial grip, only achieving 0.78 g on the skidpad. When in Sport mode, the light steering becomes somewhat rubbery, and the combination of regenerative and friction brakes results in a touchy brake pedal. Nevertheless, the Escape impressively stops from 70 mph in just 176 feet. Which is 19 feet shorter than the RAV4 Prime’s considerably longer result.
