Jeep Cherokee Specifications & Features
If the SUV-friendly fascia of the 2023 Jeep Cherokee appears familiar, it is because not much has changed since the 2014 launch of the Jeep’s small crossover. That qualifies you for Social Security in car years. The current KL generation of the Cherokee will cease production in 2023, but the newest old Cherokee has some modern equipment hidden beneath its worn-out sheet metal. Two trim levels and a new powertrain are all that Jeep has left as it gets ready to replace the aging Cherokee. All Trailhawk and Altitude Lux models available this year come standard with all-wheel drive. The Cherokee’s starting price is now far higher than that of rivals like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Kia Sportage, but the Jeep at least makes up for it with basic comforts. The outdated V-6 is replaced with the new, Trailhawk-only, 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, which offers superior fuel efficiency.
What’s New?
For 2023, Jeep significantly changes the Cherokee compact crossover’s trim levels and engine. The Cherokee has eliminated the previously common front-wheel drive base Cherokee and is now only offered in two trims, Altitude Lux and Trailhawk. This has had a considerable impact on the Cherokee’s beginning pricing. The 271-horsepower V-6 is also gone, and in its stead comes a 2.7-liter inline-four with 270 hp that is only offered in the Trailhawk model, which is designed for off-road driving. Leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start are included as standard equipment with the Altitude Lux. Production of the current Cherokee, which debuted in 2014 and has remained essentially unchanged in its current KL generation, expires in 2023.
Jeep Cherokee Engine, Power, Performance & Acceleration
Inline-four engines with 180 horsepower are used in the Jeep Cherokee’s Altitude Lux variant, while 2.0-liter units with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque are used in the off-road-capable Trailhawk model. Both come with AWD as standard equipment and combine with a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Although we haven’t tested either engine, its raucous 2.0-liter is just one horsepower short of the V-6 available in the Cherokee from a year ago. The Cherokee drives with the heaviness and sturdiness you’d expect from a Jeep, making it feel bigger than its competitors. Body roll in corners is controlled by rather a strong suspension calibration without sacrificing ride comfort. Without excessive reverberation, impacts are dispersed, and the Jeep never seems floaty on the highway. In emergency braking situations, a strong brake pedal promotes composure, and the Cherokee’s performance from 70 mph to zero is class average.

According to the EPA, the Cherokee is among the lowest fuel efficiency in its class of small crossovers and SUVs. The 180-hp 2.4-liter inline-four-powered variant is the most fuel-efficient; it achieves EPA estimates of 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Less favorably rated, the 2.0-liter inline-four, 270-hp Trailhawk’s more potent engine gets 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. In terms of EPA city and highway mileage, that is 2 mpg more than the Trailhawk powered by a V-6 from the previous model year.

One of the best in the business, the Jeep’s Uconnect infotainment system comes standard and has a tonne of functions and a well-organized menu. The typical touchscreen is 8.4 inches long. Every model gains two USB ports on the back of the center console for use by passengers in the back seats beginning with the Latitude Plus trim. Every Cherokee is equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the option of a paid Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Trailhawk model of the Cherokee is the priciest, but it’s also the greatest. Its potent turbocharged four-cylinder engine offers a higher EPA rating than the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter featured in the Altitude Lux in addition to having a larger towing capacity. Thanks to the standard Jeep Active Drive Lock, which fortifies the drivetrain with a locking rear differential and a unique traction mode for climbing out of extremely muddy or rocky circumstances, the Trailhawk not only looks tougher but is.
