Mercedes C43 AMG Fact, Features & Performance
2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 is the extra-certified version of the new C-class, along with AMG’s downsized future. AMG has been downsizing its engine with a twin-turbo V6 displaced by a turbo four in the 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43. However, this is not new, AMG has been producing four-cylinder engines since 2013, and fitting them transversely to cars like GLA, CLA, and A-class. It is a C-class coupe or convertible with a more powerful engine and superior driving dynamics. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine pumping out 402 horses with all-wheel drive is standard. Its suspensions are slightly stiff that’s why the ride will be bumpier on the same bad patches. C43 offers luxurious and futuristic cabins but the story will be opposite for back seat passengers. They have limited legroom as well as headroom due to their coupe styling.
What’s New?
Just like the regular C-class, it sports a well-finished cabin with a high level of standard technology. The MBUX operating system powers the 12.3-inch portrait-oriented central touchscreen and the steering wheel houses four spokes plus two round binnacles to accommodate all of its controls. Also, there’s now a physical AMG button to get straight to the dynamic settings. The new C43 engine is more sophisticated than its predecessor, but in the meantime, it’s less charismatic. The exhaust note keeps up with the potent four-cylinder engine and easily manages some pops when the throttle is lifted, although some of that is digitally enhanced through the audio system.
Engine & Performance
The downsized turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four replaces the 3.0L twin-turbo V6, but it has not lost the power. Using an advanced electrically assisted turbocharger, the turbo is built by Garrett Motion and uses a compact electric motor between the turbine and compressor which acts directly on the shaft. This adds a claimed 6 kW of assistance and spins at speeds of up to 170,000 rpm. The turbo’s e-motor builds boost even when exhaust gas isn’t flowing, this helps reduce response delay. With that, the C43 is hugely fast and dynamically secure. AMG claims a top speed of 155 mph and 4.6 seconds to 60 mph. Also, the car now features a launch-control system and significant weight reduction. When tapped, throttle response is clean and lag-free, with no delay even when constant revs are applied.
Fuel Economy
2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 Mileage | City | Highway |
AMG C43 | 19 mpg | 28 mpg |
The car hasn’t been EPA fuel economy rated yet for 2023. But despite the downsized engine, don’t expect to see much change from the outgoing model which was rated for 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.
Dimensions, Space & Airbags
2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 Dimensions | |
Length | 188.6 in |
Width | 71.8 in |
Height | 57.1 in |
Wheelbase | 112.8 in |
Cargo Volume | 12 ft3 |
Airbags | 9 Airbags |
As expected from AMG, steering is good with more low-level feedback. The grip levels are impressive, too, with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The car rides firm at low speeds, regardless of drive modes and the controlled adjustable dampers make it easy on the 20-inch rims. The electric turbo and its contribution is almost invisible, one can hear an enhanced induction whine at lower speeds as the turbo builds boost.
Pricing
2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 Pricing | Price (USD) |
Premium | $63,000 (est) |
Exclusive | $68,000 (est) |
Pinnacle | $73,000 (est) |
The pricing for the base variant should start at $63,000 (est). Even if there is a downgrade in the soul, it still sports the power and dynamics to cater to a good experience for the driver. Unfortunately, we don’t expect to see coupe and convertible models of the C43 this time around, although the previous generation C43 coupe and convertible remain in the mix for the 2023 model year.
