When it comes to maximum towing capacity, the massive 2023 RAM HD 2500 and 3500 HD pickups are the lords of the hill for the Ram brand. The Ram 3500’s incredible 1075 pound-feet of usable torque allows it to tow up to 37,090 pounds when equipped with a high-output 400-hp Cummins diesel inline-six engine. The Ram HD still produces enough power when powered by the standard 410-hp Hemi V-8 engine to compete with rivals like the Chevrolet Silverado HD and Ford Super Duty trucks. Even though the heavy-duty Ram is incredibly robust, life behind the wheel isn’t quite as simple as it seems. For 2023, the Ram HD portfolio is expanded to include a new Rebel trim. The Power Waggon, which only has four-wheel drive, is equipped with this engine and gearbox. However, a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel inline-six with either rear- or four-wheel drive is also available for every other model. There are two diesel versions available. The first has 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque and is offered in both 2500 and 3500 variants. Only available on the 3500, the 400-hp high-output version produces a mind-blowing 1075 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to the more recent 10-speed transmissions used in all of its diesel rivals.

The base 410-hp 6.4-liter gasoline engine is more than capable, especially in the 3500, but the majority of Ram HD customers are ready to pay more for the diesel. We recommend sticking with the 2500 4×4 Crew Cab Laramie, the most popular model, for the best balance of capacity, room, luxury, and cost. If towing large trailers is not a top priority for you, stick with the 410-hp V-8, which is speedier around town and matches well with a superb eight-speed automatic. Spend the money saved to add the load-leveling air suspension and limited-slip differential, which enhance Ram’s already excellent ride quality.

Power Waggon and Rebel variants offer off-road capability, high-end models provide opulent quarters. The most powerful diesel engine is not available on all models, and occasionally a big truck is a too much truck. The diesel powertrain is an antiquated six-speed auto.
