BMW i5 Specifications & Features
The mid-size 2024 BMW i5 sedan, which will bridge the gap between the Award-winning i4 and the extra-premium i7 flagship, will electrify BMW’s executive express. The i5 is anticipated to combine luxurious amenities with a fun driving experience, just like those two EV four-doors. Beginning with a rear-drive eDrive40 variant with 335 horsepower, two powertrains will be available. A robust 590 horsepower is added by the dual-motor M60 xDrive, which also delivers all-wheel drive traction. The i5 competes with an increasing number of medium-sized premium electric vehicles designed to appeal to wealthy customers seeking eco-friendly options. What’s New?
The i5 offers an electric vehicle (EV) option for customers considering BMW’s mid-size sedan lineup and making its debut alongside a brand-new version of the gasoline-powered 5-series. It should be available in BMW shops by the end of 2023. The interior of the i5 is equally as roomy and luxurious as the 5-series fueled by petrol. The battery doesn’t obstruct the interior, although the trunk is a little bit smaller than it was in the 5-series. A set of glass interior controls is also available and gives the sedan’s interior a sophisticated touch. Leather upholstery is still an option, but BMW is introducing a new faux-leather upholstery called Veganza in the i5.
BMW i5 Motor, Battery, Range & Performance
Two i5 variants are available: the first, the 335-hp eDrive40, utilizes a single electric motor for the rear wheels. The hotter M60 xDrive variant supplements this with a second electric motor for the front axle. Resulting in a combined 590 horsepower. Testing a prototype of the sedan, we found the i5 M60 to exhibit nimble handling. Confidence-inspiring cornering grip, and a robust dual-motor powertrain. According to BMW, the i5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.7 seconds with the more potent powertrain. M60 versions feature additional enhancements like active anti-roll bars, a sportier suspension setting, larger tires, and rear-wheel steering for an even more athletic appearance.
The i5 houses an 84.3-kWh battery pack under its floorboards. Purportedly providing a 295-mile range for the eDrive40 model between charges, as claimed by BMW. The M60 variant, featuring dual motors, exhibits less efficiency with an estimated 256-mile range on a single charge. The car’s battery pack can link up to DC fast-charging stations, boasting a 30-minute timeframe to charge from 10 to 80 percent. Concerning charging, each new BMW i5 includes three years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America charging points.

As per EPA assessments, the eDrive40 emerges as the pinnacle of efficiency among i5 models. Boasting an impressive 105 MPGe on the highway. In stark contrast, the M60 xDrive lags behind, registering a more modest 86 MPGe on highway ratings.

The dashboard of the i5 is dominated by a huge, curved panel with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The most recent iDrive 8.5 interface from BMW is simple to use and can be updated via over-the-air updates if necessary. All variants come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, in-dash navigation, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a Harman/Kardon sound system, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. A head-up display is an optional feature.

The eDrive40 will be able to cruise for a little while longer than the performance-oriented M60 model if you’re aiming to maximize range. But because we enjoy driving, we’d willingly sacrifice a little range for more power and cornering grip.
