2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA Specifications & Features

The ferocious and furious GLA35 is the ideal example of how a Mercedes-Benz and a 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA-Class vary from one another. The AMG GLA35 frowns, while the more ordinary GLA250 smiles. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces a respectable 302 horsepower, and its dual-clutch gearbox makes quick adjustments to distribute power to all four wheels. Additionally, it has a far higher peak speed than its Benz equivalent. It should come as no surprise that all of that improved performance has a price, both literally and figuratively. We found the AMG GLA-class to be a little too stiff for everyday commuting, aside from its higher price tag, and we’re not sure if the improved driving dynamics make it a better option than more comfortable rivals like the Volvo XC40 or BMW X1.

What’s New?

The boisterous, 382-hp AMG GLA45 appears to have been deleted from the lineup, leaving the GLA35 as the sole offering for the 2024 model year—though Mercedes has yet to make an official comment regarding retiring the more powerful variant. Other improvements include new front and rear aesthetics, as well as upgraded LED headlights and taillights, and for the first time, the AMG crest appears on the GLA35’s bonnet. The engine output remains the same, but a 48-volt hybrid-assist technology has been added—Mercedes claims it delivers a brief power boost of 13 horsepower under specific driving circumstances and improves start/stop functionality. The AMG Performance steering wheel with AMG Drive Unit buttons is now standard on the inside.

The GLA35 is driven by an AMG-tuned turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 302 horsepower, which Mercedes claims is enough to propel the SUV to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. The previous version GLA45, which had 375 horsepower, reached 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, so we believe Mercedes is being conservative in its acceleration promise for the current GLA35 model. AMG engineers endowed this edition with the same amount of athleticism as the previous generation AMG GLA-class but were able to incorporate a little more ride comfort. The previous-generation vehicle had relatively little suspension compliance, resulting in a harsh ride. AMG has also equipped the GLA35 with hybrid-assist technology beginning with the 2024 model year, but we don’t anticipate it to increase performance.

The EPA has not yet released figures for the 2024 AMG GLA35. With the inclusion of the hybrid-assist system, we anticipate that figures will increase. For comparison, the 2023 GLA35 is expected to get 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. These efficiency figures are comparable to competitors such as the BMW X2 M35i and the Mini Cooper Countryman JCW.

Dimensions & Space

The dashboard of the GLA-Class is dominated by two massive 10.3-inch infotainment displays. One functions as a reprogrammable gauge display, while the other controls the infotainment system. The interface uses Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX software, which includes the “Hey Mercedes” voice control system, but it may also be managed via the touchscreen or the center console touchpad. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although navigation is an additional expense.

For 2024, the AMG GLA-Class comes in a single variant: the GLA35. Although we prefer the GLA45 with its 382-hp turbo-four, the 302-hp GLA35 is still an appealing option with lively acceleration. It comes standard with a slew of performance equipment, including all-wheel drive and a tuned-and-tweaked suspension, which boosts driving exhilaration significantly over the ordinary Mercedes-Benz GLA250. Unfortunately, heated and ventilated seats are not standard, so we’d choose those over the AMG Performance seats. We’d also choose the Night package, which replaces chrome accents with gloss black.
