While electric options might be stealing the spotlight, 2024 promises a fresh wave of exciting diesel cars in India. Though stringent emission norms and DPF/DEF maintenance concerns have posed challenges, diesel’s allure of superior fuel efficiency and muscular torque remains strong. Although some manufacturers have waved goodbye to diesel, several key players like Kia, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Toyota, and even luxury giants like BMW and Mercedes-Benz are keeping the flame alive. In this article, we will talk about the best and most anticipated diesel car launches for 2024 in India.
1. Mahindra XUV300 Facelift:
Similar to the outgoing model, the upcoming Mahindra XUV300 facelift will feature the 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine producing 115 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. Paired with a 6-speed manual and an AMT gearbox, it boasts best-in-segment torque figures. The XUV300 Facelift will also receive updates such as a new front fascia, revamped rear profile, and changes to the dashboard layout. It will go on sale next month in India.
2. Hyundai Alcazar Facelift:
Expected to launch around the festive season of 2024, the Hyundai Alcazar Facelift will receive comprehensive updates inside and out, similar to the latest Creta Facelift. Under the hood, it will retain the 1.5-litre CRDi diesel engine producing 115 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Additionally, it will offer the familiar 1.5-litre tGDi petrol engine with power output rated at 158 bhp and 253 Nm of peak torque.
3. New-gen Kia Carnival:
Showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, the new-gen Kia Carnival launch in India will commence sometime this year. Based on an all-new N3 platform, the facelift model of the 4th-generation Carnival will feature the familiar 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, delivering 200 bhp and 440 Nm of peak torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The new-gen Kia Carnival will also grow significantly in dimensions, offering more cabin space.
4. Mahindra Thar 5-Door:
The long-awaited Mahindra Thar 5-Door has been spotted multiple times during testing in India. It will pack a powerful 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. While specific power figures are away from the launch, it may likely offer the 175 bhp engine available in the Scorpio N. With lower variants possibly featuring the 130 bhp tune seen in the current Thar and other models. The Mahindra Thar is expected to debut in the second half of 2024.
5. Tata Curvv:
Recently unveiled at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Global Expo in its near-production guise, Tata Motors has confirmed that the upcoming Curvv will be available with a diesel engine option. It will feature the familiar 1.5-litre turbo diesel unit from the Nexon, delivering 115 bhp and 260 Nm of peak torque. Additionally, it is expected to offer a new 1.2-litre GDI petrol engine. The Tata Curvv is anticipated to debut around mid-2024 in the Indian market.
