Upcoming New Toyota Fortuner To Launch Soon In India

Toyota to soon launch its new Fortuner SUV in India in 2024, Reports

The Toyota Fortuner is renowned in India for its commanding road presence and robust engine performance. However, its fuel consumption has been a concern due to its thirsty engine. Recently, Toyota introduced the new Hilux, which shares the same 2.8-litre diesel engine as the Fortuner but now incorporates hybrid technology. So, how will this new technology benefit the 2024 Toyota Fortuner, and when can we expect its launch in India? Let’s dig in and find out more about the upcoming Toyota Fortuner.

In 2023, Toyota unveiled an updated Fortuner in Thailand, featuring minimal updates such as added features and increased power output. The Thailand-spec Fortuner boasts a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, the interior layout remains largely unchanged. Regarding performance, the Thailand-spec Fortuner now delivers 224bhp and 550Nm, representing a boost of 23bhp and 50Nm. Notably, this enhanced performance is exclusive to the GR Sport variant.

Specifications & Performance

Both the Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Hilux are equipped with the same 2.8-litre diesel engine, generating 201bhp and 500Nm of peak torque, available with automatic and manual transmission options. For the 2024 model year, Toyota has integrated the Hilux’s 2.8-litre engine with a 48V mild hybrid technology. This hybrid system aims to enhance fuel efficiency, performance, and off-road capabilities. It’s anticipated that the hybrid technology could improve mileage by up to 10%. Additionally, the updated start/stop system, aided by hybrid tech, will contribute to improved fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the battery will assist in reducing engine idling from 700rpm to 600rpm, resulting in better mileage and a quieter cabin environment.

In terms of performance, the battery can supply an additional 16bhp and 65Nm of torque to the 2.8-litre engine, leading to improved throttle response and acceleration. However, the real-world difference may not be substantial. Toyota also suggests that the waterproofed battery will enhance water-wading capacity, while regenerative braking will aid in controlled downsloping. Given that the Hilux and Fortuner share the same platform and engine, it’s reasonable to assume that Toyota will introduce the Fortuner with the new 48V mild hybrid technology.
