Overview

Mercedes-AMG SL 43 is an entry-level sports car, coming 5 months after we saw the flagship SL 55 and SL 63 V8 models. This roadster is re-introduced nearly after six decades when the last four-cylinder SL rolled off the production line in 1963.

What’s New?

Powering this new entry-level SL is a new AMG’s 2.0L four-cylinder M139 engine using an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This technology derived from Formula 1 racing cars, and a first for a production vehicle claimed by Mercedes. The turbocharger is operated by a 48-volt electrical system that feeds the belt-driven starter-generator (RSG).

This system gives a temporary boost in power, along with mild-hybrid capabilities which allow gliding mode and energy recovery for increased efficiency. The SL43’s 2.0L four-cylinder makes 381 hp and 480 Nm of torque. The starter-generator system adds up an extra 14 hp for short periods defining a mild hybrid. All this power is handled by the same MCT 9 speed-automatic transmission to the rear wheels only.

Stepping on the throttle, the engine throws the AMG from 0-60 Mph in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 171 Mph. SL 43 may have half the turbos, half the cylinders, and half the displacement of its muscular siblings, but it doesn’t lack half the performance. With a smaller engine there is less mass up front, so to handle it Mercedes tweaked it by using lighter torsion bar stabilizers specific to this trim.

SL 43 Appearance

The SL 43 looks similar to the rest of the lineup, for an average observer. But for an enthusiast, the small changes would matter a lot as these are vents on the lower front fascia, as well as a smooth rear fascia devoid of vertical vents. The exhaust tips are oval with SL 43 badging. Equipped with standard 19-inch wheels, where 20-inch and 21-inch wheels are optional.

From features point, it has all the cool features common to the SL55 and SL63. This includes rear steering, drive modes, AMG Dynamic Plus Package, and a luxurious interior filled with digital screens and the latest MBUX system. Pricing for the Mercedes-AMG SL43 will be announced closer to production.
