Overview

Smart #1 is a new EV from Smart, a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. Although its operations and sales were put to stop in the U.S. in 2019, it didn’t stop it from disappearing from other parts of the world. This latest crossover is all about sleek looks, a plethora of technology and an all-electric powertrain.

What’s New?

The length of #1 is a couple of inches longer than the Kia Soul, and about half an inch taller. The front-fascia consists of triangular LED headlights with a central light bar connecting them. The body has smooth surfacing with flush door handles, a contrasting floating roof and taillights that mate the headlight design. The short overhangs, lower body cladding and 19-inch wheels give it a nice stance. Also, the trapezoidal grille makes the #1 look minimalistic.

The interior is also pretty minimal, a tall floating centre console with a bunch of storage pockets, a dashboard with a wing-like contrasting finish and oval-shaped details. The instrument cluster is a super-slim 9.2-inch screen that sits right in front of the driver. Also, it is coupled with a 10-inch HUD, and there’s an isolated 12.8-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dash featuring a new infotainment system with AI-based voice controls.

Well coming to the rear bench, the seats slide and recline too. From the looks of #1, it seems to have good cargo space. The car would be featuring OTA updates, phone-as-key capability and several driver-assist systems.

Battery, Range & Top-Speed

Being a subsidiary of Mercedes, the #1 is not based on its parent platform. Using Chinese automaker Geely’s SEA electric architecture, the #1 features a 66 kWh battery pack including a single electric motor that powers the rear wheels. This motor puts out 268 hp and 343 Nm of torque. According to Smart, #1 has a maximum range of 273 miles on the European WLTP cycle. Charging speeds are 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes using a DC fast charger.
