Toyota’s first electric SUV, the new Urban SUV is all set to make its India entry in 2025
The Indian automotive market is witnessing a shift as established players like Toyota move towards the electric revolution. Toyota’s much-anticipated entry into the Indian EV market is set for the second half of 2025, with the debut of the Toyota Urban SUV. This futuristic midsize SUV is based on the Urban SUV concept unveiled in late 2023. It aims to redefine the segment with its blend of cutting-edge technology, captivating design, and practical functionality.
The Toyota Urban SUV shares its platform with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX. It uses the 27PL skateboard platform developed by Maruti Suzuki in India. This strategic collaboration optimises production efficiency and fosters a platform for future electric vehicle development within the country.
Distinctive Design and Practicality:
While sharing a similar footprint as its Maruti counterpart (measuring 4,300mm in length, 1,820mm in width, and 1,620mm in height), the Toyota Urban SUV carves out its own visual identity. The design philosophy prioritizes sharp, edgy surfaces, complemented by C-shaped LED daytime running lamps. The overall silhouette exudes a sense of ruggedness and contemporary appeal, aligning seamlessly with the evolving language of electric vehicles.
Tailored Powertrain Options for Diverse Needs:
Toyota recognizes the diverse needs of Indian consumers and offers two battery pack options with the Urban SUV. The first option is a 60kWh unit with a projected range of approximately 550 km, ideal for extended journeys and frequent travellers. The second option boasts a 48kWh battery pack, targeting an estimated range of 400 km and catering to those seeking a more affordable and city-centric solution.
Beyond Style: A Feature-Rich Interior and Driving Experience:
The Toyota Urban SUV promises to be more than a stylish electric vehicle. The spacious interior prioritizes comfort and functionality, while an anticipated suite of features, including advanced connectivity options and driver assistance systems, promises to enhance the overall driving experience.
India’s Competitive Landscape:
The Indian EV market is witnessing a surge in activity, with several established players and new entrants vying for consumer attention. The Toyota Urban SUV will face direct competition from the likes of the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, and its sibling, the Maruti Suzuki eVX. However, Toyota’s brand legacy, focus on quality, and strategic approach to electrification position the Urban SUV as a strong contender in this electrifying segment.
A Glimpse into the Future of Indian Mobility:
The arrival of the Toyota Urban SUV marks a significant milestone for both Toyota and the Indian automotive industry. This debut highlights Toyota’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions and its dedication to evolving alongside the changing market dynamics. With the Urban SUV poised to hit showrooms in September-October 2025, Indian automotive enthusiasts eagerly await its arrival, marking a new chapter in the country’s electric vehicle journey.
