2024 Audi SQ8 e-Tron vs BMW iX: What To Choose?
The 2024 SQ8 e-Tron packs a punch with a 496-hp electric powertrain, earning its place among Audi’s performance models. Offered in squareback and fastback styles, it shares the luxurious feel of its counterparts but boasts a sportier aesthetic and more power. With a 106-kWh battery, it promises a decent range, albeit less than rivals like the BMW iX and Tesla Model X. Quick charging through DC stations is a plus, and the anticipated 240-mile range should satisfy most users. On the other hand, BMW’s iX shines as one of the premier electric SUVs in their lineup. Comparable in size to the X5, it sports dual electric motors, delivering 516 hp in the xDrive50 models and an impressive 610 hp in the M60 trim. Despite a claimed 300-mile range, testing shows around 290 miles on the highway. Still exceeding competitors like the Audi e-tron and Rivian R1S.

Audi SQ8 e-Tron
Motor & Performance
The SQ8 e-Tron, sharing its platform with the Q8 e-Tron, boasts a more potent three-motor electric powertrain delivering 496 hp. With two electric motors on the rear axle, the SQ8 e-Tron can replicate a torque-vectoring differential. Directing more power to the outside rear wheel as needed for improved cornering. All SQ8 e-Tron models come equipped with a 106.0-kWh battery pack that supports a 170 kW DC fast-charging connection. This setup allows for an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 253 miles per charge. However, opting for the larger 22-inch wheels reduces the range estimate to 218 miles.
Price & Mileage
Audi has provided pricing only for the entry-level Premium Plus models, which we consider the best value. The SQ8 e-Tron starts at $90,995 and goes up to $99,795 for the Prestige Sportback. The SQ8 e-Tron is EPA-rated for up to 72 MPGe in the city and 75 MPGe on the highway. While these numbers may seem high compared to gas-powered SUVs, there are electric alternatives that achieve even higher efficiency ratings.
Acceleration & Features
We estimate that the new SQ8 e-Tron will accelerate to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. The interior features a large 10.1-inch touchscreen display seamlessly integrated into the dashboard. Complemented by a smaller 8.6-inch display connecting the dash to the center console. The lower display handles secondary controls like climate settings and drive modes. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In-dash navigation, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.
BMW iX
Motor & Performance
The iX lineup offers two distinct variants. The xDrive50, powered by a pair of electric motors producing a combined 516 hp with standard AWD, and the high-performance M60 variant, boasts an impressive 610 hp. The entry-level xDrive50 can be equipped with an optional adjustable air suspension and rear-wheel-steering system, while these features come standard on the M60. The iX is equipped with a substantial 105.2-kWh battery pack, providing an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 324 miles per charge. Standard DC fast charging capability allows the iX to recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 35 minutes when connected to a 200-kW connection.
Price & Mileage
The M60 model comes with a substantial price increase compared to the xDrive50 trim. The iX lineup starts at $88,095 for the xDrive50 and goes up to $112,495 for the M60. According to EPA estimates, the most efficient iX model is the one equipped with the standard 20-inch wheels, earning ratings of 86 MPGe in the city and 87 MPGe on the highway. Opting for larger wheel sets slightly reduces these numbers.
Acceleration & Features
In a test, the iX xDrive50 accelerated to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds, and we estimate that the high-performance M60 variant is capable of propelling the mid-size SUV to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. Originally serving as the launchpad for BMW’s iDrive 8 infotainment software, the iX has received a free over-the-air update to iDrive 8.5. This software allows for menu and graphics customization, along with a voice-activated assistant. The iX features a tech-forward dashboard design with a large 14.9-inch infotainment display paired with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and BMW also offers a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 5G cellular connection. An 18-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system comes standard, while a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setup is available as an option.
